Colorado Christian Basketball lost their second-straight Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game Saturday, falling 80-51 to Western New Mexico in Silver City.
Â
From the game's opening moments, CCU's shorthanded squad struggled to create a spark against the Mustangs. WNMU, on the other hand, lit up the court – shooting 61% from the field and 80% (8-for-10) from deep in the first half to set the tone for the game early. Unable to stop the home team and unable to match their efforts, the Cougars took a 16-point deficit into the locker room at the half.
Â
The second period went no better, as the Mustangs extended their lead to nearly 30 points thanks to 12 makes from three and 38 points off the bench. Western also took better advantage of CCU turnovers, scoring 32 points off Christian giveaways. Though
Kate Louthan and
Kayla Fakelman combined for 25 points, CCU's offensive efficiency just wasn't as sharp as it needed to be.
Â
After 40 minutes of play, the Cougars had mustered a 38% clip from the field, 20% from downtown, and a meager 58% from the free throw line. CCU hit just two three pointers and seven free shots, and committed a disappointing 26 turnovers.
Â
Now 0-8 on the year, the bruised Cougars will spend the coming week rehabbing and resting before playing host to Black Hills State and Chadron State on Friday and Saturday.
