Strong Start Propels Cougars Victory

CCU took on Colorado Mesa University on Saturday night at the CCU Event Center in Lakewood, CO and came away victorious by a final score of 72-61. It was a strong offensive showing for the Christian squad as they dominated early in the game to build a comfortable lead which they maintained throughout. They led the entire game while never allowing CMU to build any substantial momentum.

Colorado Christian gained the early edge in the first quarter thanks to the strong play by Kate Louthan. Less than a minute and a half into the first quarter the Cougars had a 7-0 advantage with all seven of their points coming from the hot hand in Louthan. The rest of the team got into the action as well and after the end of the first period they already had a 21 point lead with the score being 28-7. Mesa fought hard in the second quarter and was able to cut the lead down to 12 points as they trailed by a score of 37-25 heading into halftime.

The second half was a battle as Mesa began to crawl back into the game thanks in part to their efforts from beyond the three point line. However CCU was able to force timely turnovers against CMU, which assured them the victory on the night.

Leading the way for Colorado Christian tonight was Kate Louthan who filled up the stat sheet. She finished the game with 19 points as she hit on 6-9 shots she took. Louthan also added five rebounds and six assists to round out her game. Claire Paxton also had a strong game as she finished with 16 points on 7-11 shooting from the field. Paxton also led the team in rebounds with seven, and was a force on the inside as she blocked three CMU shots. Taylor Torres scored all nine of her points fro the free throw line, and also grabbed four rebounds and dished out four assists. On the night, the Cougars shot 47% from the field (25-53), and nearly 80% from the free throw line (19-24).

The win improves the Cougars record to 6-3 on the season and 3-2 in conference play. They will be heading into Christmas break on a high note as this was their last contest this year. The next game for them will be on New Year's day as they will travel down to New Mexico to take on New Mexico Highlands University. Tip is scheduled for 5PM MST.
