Though their loss to Florida Southern on Saturday was a narrow one that came in extra innings, Colorado Christian Softball could not bounce back in time for Wednesday's rematch. The doubleheader in Lakeland, FL ended with FSC on top 7-5 and 2-0 – dropping CCU's record on the season to 2-6.
Â
CCU's Cougars got a slow start to the day. Sluggish at the plate in the afternoon loss, Christian managed just two hits compared to seven from the home Mocs. After four strikeouts in the first two innings, the blue and gold finally made a connection with a
Kristina Billante double in the third inning. Unfortunately, a pair of consecutive fly-outs assured the Cougars would retire the inning without a score.
Â
Misfortune ensued for CCU through the next few frames, as Florida Southern pitcher Brandi Jones haunted batter after Christian batter, forcing three Ks, three fly-outs, and three ground-outs in innings four through six.
Â
Though
Jessica Romine led off the seventh with a single, Colorado Christian wouldn't manage another hit. A pair of FSC errors made things interesting, but not enough to help the Cougars back into the game.
Â
Mariah Bledsoe (1-2) commanded the circle for CCU. Though she didn't allow a single earned run, the senior picked up her second loss of the season. FSC's Brandi Jones advanced to 4-0 after tallying nine strikeouts in seven innings of work.
Â
Colorado Christian had better offensive success in the finale, but the Mocs again fared better. The Cougars took the early 1-0 lead when a
Danielle Romine triple to right field scored sister
Jessica Romine in the first, but Florida Southern gained the advantage in the bottom of the inning thanks to an untimely Christian error. An FSC double in the second moved the score to 3-1, but Christian's answer in the third proved a dramatic one. With both Romines on base, freshman
Letty Valenzuela drilled a three-RBI bomb over the center field fence – her first hit as a Cougar.
Â
Stephanie Tatham followed suit in the fourth, moving the scoreboard to 5-4 with a one-RBI triple to right field, but the Cougars wouldn't score again. FSC, meanwhile, managed another three runs in the fifth and sixth to guarantee the 7-5 win.
Â
Picking up where she left off last weekend,
Jessica Romine wrapped the game with an impressive 3-for-4 effort at the plate. The senior also accounted for two of Christian's five runs in the loss.
Â
Though
Jennie Winston started the contest,
Tana Feiner (0-2) picked up the loss after pitching a little more than five innings for the Cougars. The two allowed a combined six earned runs on seven hits.
Â
CCU looks to end their four-game skid tomorrow with a doubleheader at Eckerd College. The Cougars take the field at 3:00, MST.
