Colorado Christian overcame an early three-run deficit, and a handful of errors, to defeat Warner University (FL) 12-5 and pick up their first win of 2015.
After being shut out on Saturday against Eckerd College, the Cougars' offense came alive and produced several big innings to put away the host Royals.
Christian did the most damage with a five-run seventh inning, tallying extra base hits to push runs across the plate.
Ryan Silva,
Zach Scott, and
Brandon Hesselberg each had RBI doubles to help turn a 4-4 deadlock into a five-run advantage.
The visitors tacked on three more in the ninth after a wild pitch scored
Jerry Gallegos and
Dustin Conley doubled to plate another two and put the game out of reach.
"Tonight we pulled together as a team and did the little things right after the tough start," commented Conley. "We need to continue getting better game by game, and not stop here."
Of the Cougars' ten hits, six were doubles, with five of them producing runs. Senior
Taylor Dudley, one of three players with a two-RBI effort, knotted the game in the fifth inning with his two-run knock down the left field line.
Christian's four pitchers on the afternoon combined for a solid effort on the mound. Starter
Daniel Bednarski went five innings, but with the contest tied at his exit, ended with a no decision. Bednarski allowed only two earned runs and struck out three, and gave way to relievers that finished the job.
Garret Henrichsen,
Alistair Reynolds, and
Danny Graves came out of the bullpen and held the Royals to just three hits over the final four innings. Henrichsen (1-0) would pick up the win for his work in the sixth and seventh while Reynolds and Graves each struck out two WU batters in their respective inning on the bump.
CCU returns to the field tomorrow to take on Webber International for a two-game set in Babson Park, FL. Tuesday's contest against the Warriors is a 4 PM first pitch.
