Colorado Christian Softball opened the 2015 RMAC season with a pair of losses Friday, falling 8-0 and 4-2 to the 25
th-ranked Roadrunners of Metro State. The losses dropped the Cougars to 3-11 on the year and 0-2 in league play.
Â
The day was a frustrating one for the Cougars, who struggled to get a hit against reigning RMAC Pitcher of the Week Kenzie Mattey in the opening game. It wasn't until the contest's fifth inning that
Stephanie Tatham was finally able to connect from the plate for the blue and gold. By then, unfortunately, it was much too little too late against a Roadrunner squad that managed three doubles and a homerun in their six RBI, eight run showing.
Â
Though senior
Mariah Bledsoe (1-4) got the start in the circle for the Cougars, the Erie, CO native survived just three innings before being relieved by junior
Katie Edison. The two allowed a combined eight hits and five earned runs, while striking out two MSUD batters and walking another two.
Â
In the second game, newcomer
Tana Feiner did the work for the Christian squad. Unfortunately, CCU's defense did little to support the freshman. Though Feiner impressed with a seven-strikeout showing, the Cougars committed three errors in the field, resulting in three unearned Metro State runs.
Â
Metro would go on to win 4-2, but not for lack of effort from Colorado Christian's hitters. On the way to a nine-hit game, the Cougars got big performances from seniors
Sarah Rasmussen and
Jessica Romine, who went a combined 5-for-7 and accounted for one RBI (Rasmussen) and one run (Romine).
Â
CCU got the early lead in the finale, scoring one run in the first inning off a one-RBI
Letty Valenzuela ground-out. The Roadrunners tied the game in the second, scoring on a Colorado Christian error.
Â
The third inning saw another Cougar score (their last) – a Rasmussen double to right center that sent
Kristina Billante home.
Â
Unfortunately, the home Runners would go on to get three more in the fifth and sixth to seal the win and the sweep.
Â
Though another doubleheader awaits the two squads Saturday, an impending winter storm threatens a return to play. Stay tuned to CCU Cougars online and on Twitter for the most current updates.
