With four minutes left to play in Denver Friday night, Colorado Christian Women's Basketball appeared to be in command and on their way to another win over Regis University. Up 14 points on the home team, the Cougars were enjoying a lead they'd held for almost 37 minutes. Unfortunately, last second heroics capped off a frenzied Regis run at the close of the contest, and assured the Rangers the 77-76 win. The shocking turn of events meant RMAC loss number six for the blue and gold.
Â
Though they'd been on the ropes for most of the night, the Regis squad refused to go away. Patiently, the Rangers put together a 17-2 run to close out the contest – including a dramatic and off-balanced three that would beat the buzzer secure the win. It was a frustrating outcome for a CCU team that dominated in almost every area all night long.
Â
On the glass and in the paint, Christian flexed their muscle – out-rebounding RU 41-33 and 36 points to Regis' 24 under the basket. Unfortunately, the rubber met the road beyond the arc – where the Rangers hit an impressive 12 treys compared to three from the visiting Cougars.
Â
Kate Louthan and
Christina Whitelaw led CCU's offense, combining for 35 points and accounting for ten of Christian's 17 makes from the foul line. Though they had their struggles elsewhere, the Cougars didn't miss a single free shot.
Â
Whitelaw added seven boards and five assists in the loss.
Â
Now 10-12 on the season, CCU will look to return to the win column Saturday. They'll travel to Denver again, this time to face the Roadrunners of Metro State.
