Colorado Christian Softball lost a pair of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference games Sunday, falling 5-4 and 8-2 at Regis University. The Cougars competed in both games, building a lead in the opener, but couldn't finish against the conference-leading Ranger squad.
Â
Though they've hit better, CCU took advantage of their 13 hits on the day. The Cougars built an early lead in game one, thanks to a
Sarah Rasmussen solo homerun in the first inning followed by a one-RBI
Alexa Coffing triple in the second. Regis answered with a pair of runs in the fourth and another in the fifth, setting up a back-and-forth battle that would push the game into extra innings.
Â
Two frames later, Rasmussen shot another solo bomb over the left field fence to give Christian the lead once again. Freshman
Letty Valenzuela followed suit two batters later, drilling a homer down the left field line to move the score to 4-3.
Â
Up one with an inning to play, the Cougars just needed to stand tall on defense to close out the contest with a win. Unfortunately, a timely Regis double in the seventh plated another for the home team, tying the score and assuring extra innings.
Â
The bats for both teams were quiet through the eighth, and had the squads knotted at four heading into the bottom of nine. With pitcher
Tana Feiner (6-4) in the circle, Christian forced two quick RU outs. The third batter to face Feiner in the inning would be the last, though not because the Cougars got the out. A walk-off homerun doomed CCU, putting Regis up 5-4 in the game and 2-1 in the series.
Â
Feiner struck out five Ranger batters in the loss, and allowed four earned runs on 12 hits. Offensively, it was
Sarah Rasmussen carrying the weight of work for the Cougars – the senior from Garden Valley, CA totaled two RBI and two runs in a 3-for-4 effort at the plate. Coffing went 2-for-4 with a double and a triple for CCU.
Â
Though
Jessica Romine hit a two-RBI homerun in the series finale, Colorado Christian struggled to connect against Regis pitcher Nicole Hull. The Cougars amassed just four hits in the 8-2 loss – Romine accounted for two of those. Regis, meanwhile, totaled 12 against CCU pitchers
Katie Edison and
Jennie Winston. Winston picked up the loss after allowing five earned runs and nine hits in four innings.
Â
Now five weeks into the season, the blue and gold have yet to play a game in Lakewood. Their streak of road games continues next weekend, as the Cougars travel to Chadron and Nebraska Kearney before returning home for a home series against Colorado State Pueblo.
