Adams State Baseball caught lightning in a bottle Saturday, as the home Grizzlies erupted for six homeruns in the day's doubleheader to down Colorado Christian University 3-2 and 10-1. It was a day of dominance for the ASU squad, who out-hit CCU's Cougars 26-14.
Â
Appropriately, an Adams homer got the day's scoring started. In fact, the morning's opener featured only long balls, as ASU tallied three solos for all three of their runs. CCU's only two came off a two-RBI
Zach Scott rip in the sixth. Though the game remained tied through the final inning, an Adams walk-off slammed the door on Christian's hopes for a win.
Â
The home team added variety in game two, plating runners off three singles, two doubles, and three homeruns. CCU's only answer came in the seventh and final inning, as a
Mark McMahon single to right center scored
Taylor Dudley. The Cougars managed just six hits in the 10-1 loss, with Scott and senior
Dustin Conley each going 2-for-3.
Â
Matt Weaver and
Pete McWilliams took care of business from the hill in game one, combining for four Ks and allowing three earned runs on 12 hits. The loss, however, went to McWilliams, who sits at 1-1 on the year. In the finale, it was
Austin Atkerson (1-3) who picked up the loss after a little more than four innings of work. Atkerson struck out five ASU batters, but allowed four earned runs on ten hits.
Peter Scheffel,
Jackson Gaskins, and McMahon rounded out the effort for CCU.
Â
One more chance at a win in Alamosa awaits the Cougars Sunday – they'll battle for the series split beginning at noon.
