CCU lost the day's opener 4-2 but closed with an 8-2 win over the Orediggers in Sunday's doubleheader in Golden.
Â
Dustin Conley helped Christian snag a third inning lead in game one with a two-run double to right center, scoring
Ryan Silva and
Stephen Galambos, but the Cougars failed to score again in the series opener.
Â
Along with his run scored, Silva walked twice and collected two hits including a double in the fifth inning.
Â
Starter
Matt Weaver (0-2) pitched well, striking out five batters and scattering six hits in his six innings of work, but had to shoulder the loss as only two of his four runs were earned. The Orediggers tallied three runs in the sixth and seventh innings to reclaim the lead that would hold as the game's final score.
Â
Christian picked up their first conference win of the 2015 season led by
Dustin Conley's three hit, three RBI performance. In the day's split, the senior first baseman totaled five RBI. Also pacing the Cougars was senior outfielder
Taylor Dudley who knocked in three runs in game two.
Â
Conley and Dudley each doubled and homered, and catcher
Weston Wiederhold added three hits and a RBI to his line. The trio would account for eight of the team's 12 hits in the second contest.
Â
Behind solid run support, game two winner
Ryan Erazo went six of the game's seven innings, giving up just five hits and a single run to collect his first win as a CCU pitcher. Freshman
Michael Cantrell closed out the seventh
Â
"After the tough game one, we got things to click. We have been working hard in practice and it's translating on the field," remarked
Dustin Conley. "We have to keep getting better each game from here out. I'm excited to see what we can do if we play like this every game."
Â
With inclement spring weather rearranging Christian's schedule, the series will conclude Monday afternoon with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
