After taking the series opener on Friday, Colorado Christian suffered a series setback, dropping both games of Saturday's doubleheader. The Cougars fell 8-5 and 6-4 at the hands of New Mexico Highlands.
CCU jumped all over the Cowboys in the day's opening contest as they scored five runs in the top of the first, but the Cougar bats fell silent and Highlands was able to erase the early deficit.
It appeared that Christian would put up another big game offensively after a first at-bat that sent eight hitters to the plate in the five-run inning.
Zach Scott,
Dustin Conley, and
Austin Atkerson all singled to bring home runs. Atkerson's two-run single that scored
Taylor Dudley and Conley gave CCU their fifth run before an out was ever recorded.
CCU's
Matt Weaver, looking for his first win in eight starts, was on his way before Highlands put up a five-run inning of their own in the fourth, derailing the young freshman's plans. The Cowboys took their first lead and scored two more in the sixth at reliever Jackson Gaskin's expense.
Garret Henrichsen would take over for Gaskins to end the inning.
Over the final six innings, Christian could only muster four more hits as sophomore
Zach Scott was the lone Cougar to record a multi-hit game.
Unfortunately for the Cougars it was déjà vu in game two, as the visitors struck twice in the first inning only to see NMHU respond and take control of the contest. Once again Christian looked potent early on, but the team struggled in the middle innings.
Back to back singles to start the game by
Ryan Silva and
Jerry Gallegos had CCU clicking early on. After a sac bunt by
Zach Scott put two in scoring position,
Dustin Conley sent a single to right field to score Silva and Gallegos.
Highlands did much of their damage in the third inning, taking the lead they would hold for the remainder of the game. The Cowboys scored three runs in the third and forced Christian starter
Austin Atkerson out after 3.2 innings.
The Cougars showed they had life in them yet as they tried to rally from four runs down in the top half of the seventh. Looking for a spark, both
Chance Richardson and
Mark McMahon came off the bench in pinch hit roles and led off the inning with a single and double, respectively. McMahon's extra base hit scored Richardson, giving the senior his first RBI of the season.
Christian had a pair of chances as they were able to get the tying run to the plate in both
Ryan Silva and
Jerry Gallegos, but neither could deliver as the Cowboys secured the Saturday sweep.
With the series finale set for Sunday at noon the Cougars will look to bounce back to claim a split of the four-game matchup.
