Inclement weather might have forced a change of location, but it didn't bring a change of fortune for the Cougars, as they dropped the first two games of the weekend series against Colorado Mesa 15-2 and 6-1 Saturday.
Â
Shifting from their customary digs at All-Star Park to the Runyon Complex in Pueblo, the Cougars took on a Mavericks squad that proved their top spot in the national ranking is justified.
Â
Mesa churned out 23 hits to the Cougars seven in game one, and had a 12 run lead before CCU could get on the board with a pair of runs in the eighth inning.
Â
The Christian bats were again quieted in the nightcap, as the Cougars offense struggled after taking a first inning lead.
Taylor Dudley doubled to bring home
Ryan Silva, and was followed by a
Dustin Conley single, but CCU could manage just five more hits in the remaining six innings.
Â
Game two starter
Matt Lewis held the Mavericks in check through four innings, holding the visitors to two hits through the midway point in the contest before Mesa broke through in the latter stages.
Â
Zach Scott put together a solid day at the plate, totaling four hits and reaching base five times while raising his average to .361 on the season. Meanwhile senior
Dustin Conley extended his hitting streak to 11 games with his three singles on the day.
Â
The series concludes Sunday with another pair of games. First pitch for the day's opener is slated for 11 am.
