Softball Wins Season Finale

CCU Softball bounced back from a 15-6 loss Sunday to win their 2015 regular season finale 6-5 over Adams State. The split moved the Cougars' season record to 23-27 and 17-17 in RMAC play heading into the conference tournament in Denver this week.

Though ASU dominated the day's opener, CCU would rebound quickly in the second game. A 16-9 Adams hitting advantage resulted in the 15-6 game-one decision, as the Grizzlies punished from the plate with three homers, three triples, and three doubles. Christian balanced things out in the second game, however, outhitting ASU 8-5 and using a four-run fifth inning to assure the clutch win.

The Cougars got on the board first in the finale, scoring on a Grizzly error to go up 1-0. Letty Valenzuela added to the CCU lead in the third, doubling to right field to score Jessica Romine. A pair of back-to-back Adams home runs in the fourth made things interesting, however, giving the home team a 4-2 lead with the game's end in sight.

Fortunately, Colorado Christian was on the verge of an explosive fifth-inning run. Senior Sarah Rasmussen hit the first homerun of the day for the Cougars, scoring two to neutralize the ASU lead. Valenzuela followed Rasmussen's lead on the very next at-bat, drilling another CCU bomb over the left field fence. A one-run single from Dana Rex earned the blue and gold their final score of the day.

A pinch-hit Adams homer in the sixth pulled the Grizzlies to within one, but the home team wouldn't have their chance to regain the lead as lightning and hail assured a quick ending to the late contest.

Valenzuela ended the day with three hits on six at-bats, three RBI, and three runs.

From the circle, junior Katie Edison picked up the loss in the opener, while freshman Tana Feiner earned the win in the second game after tossing seven strikeouts and allowing just four ASU hits. Mariah Bledsoe wrapped the game for Feiner, pitching one inning of relief and allowing one earned run on one hit.

Though final seeding will not be released until Monday, the Cougars solidified a spot in the post-season tournament with the weekend's wins. They'll open play on Thursday at either Regis University or Metro State.
