CCU Softball Swept at Home

Colorado Christian Softball had leads in both of Saturday's games, but the home Cougar squad could not hold on to their advantages against RMAC opponents UCCS and Western New Mexico. CCU dropped their games 12-8 and 9-4 to drop to 9-11 in league play.

Though they were outscored 21-12 on the day, the Cougars tallied 24 combined hits – matching the output at the plate from their opponents. Against the Mountain Lions in the day's opener, the Christian squad commanded a 5-1 lead before UCCS exploded for two homeruns and a double in a four-run third inning. The visitors piled on from there, tacking on seven more in the fifth and sixth thanks in part to two more bombs and a triple. CCU responded with a two-RBI homer in the sixth, but the scoring for the home team would end there.

Rasmussen finished the 12-8 loss with six RBI in a 3-for-4 effort that included two doubles and the long ball. Jessica Romine added three hits and two runs, helping the Cougars out-hit UCCS 13-12.

From the circle, it was freshman Tana Feiner (10-8) who got the loss after giving up eight runs (six earned) on eight hits. Feiner was relieved in the sixth by junior Katie Edison (four earned runs, four hits). Jennie Winston wrapped the game with a stingy seventh inning showing.

Unfortunately, things went a similar way in the day's finale against WNMU. Though the Cougars held a 4-3 lead through four innings, a two-run shot past the right field fence ignited the Mustangs in the fifth. The visitors plated four more in the next two innings, wrapping their scoring streak with one last homer – their second of the game – down the left field line.

Jessica Romine closed out an impressive day with a 4-for-5 showing, three RBI, and another run for the Cougars. Sister Danielle Romine added two runs after going 2-for-4 from the plate.

Though Winston closed the game again, senior Mariah Bledsoe picked up the loss after allowing nine hits and five earned runs.

After breaking for Easter, the CCU squad will return to play Monday to wrap the conference pod series against UCCS and WNMU. First pitch at Lakewood Park is set for 10 am.
