Colorado Christian dropped their Monday doubleheader opener 5-2, but came from behind for a dramatic 10-9 extra innings victory over Regis. With their second walk-off hit in the span of three days, the Cougars secured a series split with the Rangers.
Â
Senior outfielder
Ryan Silva went 3-for-3 from the plate in the early game, including a double and an RBI, but offense for the Cougars was sparse as the rest of the team combined for just three more hits in the game one loss.
Â
Dustin Conley's towering shot to left center, the first baseman's second home run of the season, pulled CCU to within three runs in the seventh but were limited to one more hit over the final two innings.
Â
Following his best outing of the season last week,
Austin Atkerson took the hill for CCU but couldn't replicate his form from his previous start. The sophomore from Reno, NV struck out four Ranger batters but walked three and allowed five runs, four of them earned.
Â
The Christian defense which has normally been sure-handed this season, struggled in the loss, committing four errors. Three of the miscues came in Atkerson's seven innings of work.
Â
It looked like the final game of the day and the series might hold the same fate for CCU, as the hosts jumped out to a two-run lead in the bottom of the first but gave the edge right back to the Rangers as Regis responded with six combined runs in the second and third innings.
Â
RU forced an early exit for Cougar starter
Daniel Bednarski as the junior's day ended after 3.2 innings pitched.
Â
Two more runs in the sixth by the Rangers pushed their lead to 8-3 and Christian was in danger of dropping a third straight game, but the Cougars dug deep and rallied as they did on Saturday.
Â
Pete McWilliams and
Titan Marler started the comeback with back-to-back singles. After a wild pitch, McWilliams would score on a
Chance Richardson groundout, while Marler crossed the plate on a
Ryan Silva double.
Â
A
Zach Scott single brought in Silva, and after a Regis pitching change,
Dustin Conley wasted little time in clobbering his second home run of the day, clearing the left field fence to force extra innings.
Â
Christian was forced to tie the game once again in the eighth as Silva collected an infield hit, his fourth of the game that plated
Brandon Hesselberg.
Â
Pitcher
Danny Graves navigated the ninth for CCU, stranding the go-ahead run 90 feet from home plate when he forced a fly out to end the Regis threat. As luck would have it, the sophomore Graves would have his number called once again-- this time at the plate.
Â
With one out and the bases loaded Graves lined a ball right back up the middle, deflecting off the Regis pitcher. By the time the RU third baseman could handle the ball, pinch runner
Dakota Bayles had crossed the plate and the Cougars had themselves their second walk-off win of the series.
Â
After his one inning on the mound and insertion into the lineup as a hitter,
Danny Graves had the rare distinction of becoming not only the winning pitcher, but claiming the game-winning hit as well.
Â
With the win Colorado Christian moves to 12-22 on the season and 5-19 within the RMAC. The Cougars head to Las Vegas, New Mexico later this week to square off against New Mexico Highlands. Friday's first pitch is scheduled for noon.
