CCU Separates the Wolves from the Pack

Colorado Christian Women's Basketball beats CSU-Pueblo 78-68 with a huge second half rally. This puts CCU at 10-3 in conference, tied with the Thunderwolves and fighting for second place.

After Friday nights beating on Western State, the Cougs came out 12-4 on the season and 9-3 in the RMAC. The Thunderwoles also had a big game against Colorado School of Mines Friday night who were undefeated before losing to CSUP 59-50. That put CSUP at 15-3 on the year and 10-2 in conference.

The first quarter ended 16-12 with the Thunderwolves in the lead. Unfortunately, CCU had eight turnovers and six fouls which gave Pueblo multiple opportunities to score. CSUP had eight offensive rebounds as well that hurt the Cougs on the scoreboard.

The start of the second was heated as CCU stepped up their defense and started making shots. It was a fast-paced game repeating this sequence of turnover, steal, shot, and rebound.

The Cougs trailed two points behind CSUP for the first part of the second. There were several opportunities to take the lead, but CCU struggled on offense. At about five minutes it was turnover after turnover on both sides of the bench. You could see the frustration from the coaches, but each team's defense was putting a ton of pressure on the other.

Blue and gold took the lead at four minutes with a jumper by Kate Louthan 29-28. CSUP caught up with Christian in turnovers totaling ten, eight of which were in the second. This gave CCU the lead going into the locker room at 31-30. The Cougars shot 40% from the field, 25% three, and 57% from the line.

Colo. Christian kept the lead throughout the third quarter, and the Thunderwolves stats continued to plummet. Cougar Claire Paxton became a threat to CSUP by being CCU's top scorer with 14 points. The third ended 51-48 Lady Cougars.

With seven and a half minutes left in the game, Christian had a ten-point lead (62-52) on the Thunderwolves and was looking like a well-oiled machine, firing on all cylinders. Pueblo went on a scoring run with four minutes left and closed the gap a little (68-62), but the blue and gold defense was unstoppable with two steals by Louthan. The Cougs' offense bounced back with a 12-point lead (76-64) at two minutes, and then winning the game 78-68.

Claire Paxton played outstanding with 18 total points going 5-11 FG, 2-3 3FG, and 6-6 FT. Senior Kate Louthan had a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Louthan also led in assists with three and had five steals on the night. Alex Nelson contributed ten points, and Ali Meyer had seven rebounds.

CCU outshot the Thunderwolves in the second going 46% from the field, 33% from downtown, and 79% from the line. Pueblo shot 37% FG, 28% 3FG, and 61% FT.

It was a combination of players like Paxton and Louthan stepping up their game, and then the bench doing their job that won this game.
