Colorado Christian played another close game on Saturday night, but were unable to secure the victory as they fell to Chadron State by a final score of 69-64. It marks the second straight game that the Cougs have battled down to the wire, but came up just short.
Â
The CCU offense struggled to get things going early, as they saw Chadron build up an early lead. After one quarter of play, Christian trailed by a score of 17-10. They only hit on 2-12 shots taken in the first quarter, but made 5-6 from the free throw line to keep them in the game.
Â
The offense found their rhythm in the second quarter, as they hit on 9-11 shots taken in the period. Despite the great offensive display, they only trimmed one point off of the Eagles lead, as they trailed 37-31 heading into halftime.
Â
The third quarter belonged to the Cougars on both ends of the floor. They held the Eagles to just 13 points in the quarter, and scored 18, which cut their deficit down to just a single point heading into the final 10 minutes.
Â
The Cougs gave it everything they had in the final quarter, as they were battling to earn their first conference win of the season. With just under two minutes to play, it looked as though their hard work was going to pay off. They had cut their deficit back down to just a single point, but that was as close as they would get. Chadron was able to ice the game late by hitting their free throws and won by the final score of 69-64.
Â
Alex Nelson led the team in scoring on the night as she poured in 18 points on 7-14 shooting.
Kaitlyn Hinch finished with 12 points, and was tied for the team lead in assists with five.
Leisha Crawford scored ten points and also had five assists.
Mikala Gordon led the team in rebounds with 12.
Â
The Cougars will hit the road for their next games next weekend as they will travel up to South Dakota. On Friday night they will be in Rapid City as they square off against South Dakota School of Mines. Tip is set for 5:30PM MST on Friday. Their South Dakota stretch continues on Saturday night as they will be in Spearfish to battle with Black Hills State.
