Softball Splits with Thunderwolves

Softball ended their first day of conference play with a split against the CSUP Thunderwolves. CCU won the first game 8-1, and then dropped game two 14-2. The Lady Cougars are now 1-1 in the RMAC and 2-10 overall.

CCU Softball took to their home field at Lakewood Park on Saturday morning looking to even out their record with some more wins. Pueblo was coming off a tough pre-season as well only winning one game, and going into today 1-10.

Game one started off with Pueblo scoring one run in the top of the second inning. CCU retaliated with three hits and three runs in the bottom of the second. Second at bat, Jennie Winston doubled to left field, and then CCU senior Rylee Halenar had a single, putting Winston in scoring position. It was a huge Charlotte Romero home run (3 RBI) that gave the Cougs the lead 3-1.

The action ceased until the fourth when CCU pitcher Tana Feiner struck out three of Pueblo's hitters in a row. Two swinging and one looking. This kind of defense amped up the offense.

Christian's fourth inning consisted of five runs and five hits. The Cougs started by getting on base. Jennie Winston with a single, and then Rylee Halenar and Hanna Farmer with single bunts. Charlotte Romero reached on a fielder's choice with Winston out at home.

The first run of the inning was scored by Rylee Halenar after Kristina Billante got hit by a pitch. The bases were still loaded as Letty Valenzuela stepped up to the plate. Valenzuela homered over the left field fence giving her four RBI and the Cougars a five run inning. Pueblo was able to get their last out with Stephanie Tatham popping one up to second base and ending the fourth with CCU on top 8-1.

The Cougars were able to get two more hits in the bottom of the sixth, but couldn't put any more on the scoreboard. Pueblo also was quiet in the last two innings having two hits and no opportunities to score. Pueblo had a total of four hits, one RBI, and one run.

The Cougars ended game one with a win of 8-1. They had 12 hits, eight RBI, and eight runs. Freshman Charlotte Romero, a California native, went 3-4 with two runs and three RBI. Letty Valenzuela went 1-3 with one run and four RBI. Tana Feiner (2-4) pitched and outstanding seven innings, giving up four hits and one run, striking out eight Thunderwolves, and walking three.

Game two was messier than game one for the Cougars. There were four errors made by CCU that gave the Thunderwolves the upper hand. Christian was only able to get four hits, two runs, and one RBI.

The two Cougar runs were scored in the bottom of the first by Hannah Farmer off a sacrifice fly by Letty Valenzuela, and then Charlotte Romero was able to score off an error by Pueblo's center fielder. After the first inning CCU's offense stalled. Shelby Diffenderfer came out with the loss playing 2.2 innings giving up five hits, six runs (5 earned), and striking out one. The game ended 14-2 CSUP.

The Cougars will be playing CSUP in another double header on Sunday morning at Lakewood Park. The first pitch will be at 11 AM.
