Colorado Christian Softball dropped both games on Sunday vs the Chadron State Eagles and Colorado Mesa University. The first game against CSC was a tough loss going into extra innings and being beat by four (6-2) in the tenth. Mesa defeated the Cougars in their afternoon game 5-0. CCU went 1-3 on the weekend and is 4-14 overall and 3-5 in conference.
Â
The eagles were first to score in game one off a home run by Zoe Humphries. Other than that both teams battled at the plate inning after inning. The Cougs had a chance to score in the bottom of the fourth with bases loaded, but they were crippled by CSC pitcher Tayler Hall who struck out 12 Cougars in ten innings.
Tana Feiner was holding her own at the mound for CCU doing a great job at keeping the Eagles bats quiet. Unfortunately, after a long and grueling ten innings Feiner would end the game taking the loss (4-6).
Â
The Eagles scored again in the top of the sixth making it a 2-0 lead. Christian only had two more innings to score in now and they were successful in the bottom of the sixth and then again in the bottom of the seventh creating an equalizer 2-2.
Kristina Billante and
Charlotte Romero both had single hits in the sixth putting them on base, but then they were able to advance off a wild pitch by Hall. Romero scored the first run off a
Carly Perry single. The inning ended with two Cougars left on base.
Â
Feiner continued to shut down the Eagles in the top of the seventh. CCU then scored their second run off
Charlotte Romero's single hit to left field advancing
Rylee Halenar home. The Cougars and Eagles then continued the game going into extra innings. The eighth and ninth innings were uneventful, with a lot of Chadron fly-outs and Cougar strike-outs.
Â
In the top of the tenth the Eagles bats went into overdrive and connected with a triple, double, and three singles giving them four runs. Overall Chadron had 15 hits compared to CCU's eight. The Cougar's offense just couldn't find the holes they needed to pull the win off.
Â
Game two vs Colorado Mesa was similar offensively with late scoring by the Cougs. The Mavericks had one run in the bottom of the second, three runs in the third, and then one more in the fifth. CCU scored two runs in the top of the seventh which was too little too late to win the game.
Michaela Barr was able to get on second from a double hit, and then crossing home plate off two fly outs earning the first run of the game.
Hanna Farmer singled through center which scored the second run by
Carly Perry. CCU left two on base ending the game 5-2 CMU.
Â
Freshman,
Shelby Diffenderfer threw six innings for the Cougs giving up nine hits and five runs. This puts her at 0-3 on the season. There were three CCU fielding errors against CMU as well.
Â
On the day,
Charlotte Romero led the Cougars going 4-9, with one run and one RBI.
Kristina Billante went 3-8 with 11 putouts, and
Hanna Farmer went 2-9 with one RBI.
Carly Perry had 13 putouts in both games.
Â
CCU will be traveling to Durango, CO on March 5th and 6th to play Fort Lewis College. Saturday's games start at noon and Sunday's will start at 11 AM MST.
