After four games at home and three wins, CCU Women's Basketball (12-4) hit the highway to get a look at Chadron State College (7-9). It was a good look as they were the team that walked away from Chicoine Center with the winning score of 85-77.
The Lady Cougars have had some crushing wins this season, but this game against CSC was not one they could take for granted. Even though blue and gold possessed the lead the majority of the game, the Eagles flew right behind them the entire way ending quarters 1-3 a point or two away from Colo. Christian. With eight minutes left in the game there was a two point differential between the teams (61-59). This could have been Chadron's way to the top, but turning over the ball to blue and gold caused for a beautiful
Leisha Crawford three that couldn't have come at a better time. After this CCU ran away with the game.
It was the harsh Christian shooting that would outgun the Eagles in this game. CCU shot a total of 53% from the field (32-60), 46% three (5-11), and 62% from the line (16-26). Top players were
Kate Louthan with a whopping 24 points, nine rebounds, five assists, four blocks, and four steals.
Claire Paxton followed with 18 points and seven rebounds. Newcomer
Alex Nelson had 15 on the scoreboard and freshman
Chandler Sturms with 11.
Even though the Cougs worked their offense successfully tonight, the defense lacked against Chadron who was resilient to give up the ball. Interim Coach
Darren Richie on the game "We struggled defensively against a quicker Chadron team. Our team shot well tonight and we had balanced scoring. I am proud of the determination by our Cougars."
CCU is definitely a determined team. They are tied with Regis University for second place in the RMAC and behind a three way tie for first which involves CSUP, Mines, and BHSU. The Cougars play at Regis University in Denver tomorrow night. It will be a tie-breaking game! Tip-off is set for 5 PM.
