Colorado Christian took to the field Tuesday night as they faced off against Barry University in Miami Shores, FL. Five homeruns from the Bucs led to their 13-5 defeat of the Cougars. The wind played a factor in the game as both teams combined to hit seven homeruns and score 18 runs in the game. Â
Â
The game began with an early offensive attack from Barry, as CCU found themselves looking at an early deficit. Barry was able to score five early runs and take a 5-0 lead after just three innings of play. However the Cougars answered back with some offensive firepower of their own. With one out in the fourth inning
Bryce Brenton laced a double down the right field line, which brought
Weston Wiederhold to the plate. Wiederhold sent a towering shot over the fence for a two run homerun which tightened the score and cut Barry's lead down to just 5-2.
Â
The sixth inning was an exciting one for both teams, at least on the offensive side of things. The visiting Cougars took their at bats first in the top half of the sixth.
Branden Amenta led the inning off for the CCU as he was able to force a throwing error by the shortstop and reach first. With one out,
Weston Wiederhold was hit by a pitch which put runners on first and second with just one out.
Pete McWilliams was the next Cougar who stepped into the batter's box and he got a pitch to his liking and crushed a long three run home run to left center field which tied the game up at 5-5. However, the Bucs were able to answer in a big way in the bottom half of the sixth as they exploded for seven runs including four homeruns in the inning to take a 12-5 lead over Colorado Christian.
Â
Barry added one more run in the seventh, and CCU was shutout for the final three innings to give the Bucs the 13-5 victory over the Cougs. Seven pitchers saw action in the game for the Christian squad. Notable performances came from
Alex Ginn who came in and threw 2 1/3
rd giving up just one hit and no runs.
Daniel Bednarski threw the final inning, bouncing back nicely from his outing yesterday, as he struck out the side in his one inning of work.
Â
The middle of the Cougars lineup was responsible for the majority of their offense in the game.
Bryce Brenton went 1-4 with a double and a run scored,
Weston Wiederhold went 2-3 with two runs, two RBI and a homerun, and
Pete McWilliams went 1-3 with a homerun and three RBI. The offensive star in the game for CCU was shortstop
Brandon Hesselberg who went a perfect 4-4 in the game and is now hitting a robust .455 four games into the season.
Â
The loss drops the Cougars record to 1-3 on the year. Their road trip continues tomorrow as they will travel to Fort Lauderdale, FL to take on Nova Southeastern University. First pitch is scheduled for 4PM MST.
