Colorado Christian lost the final game of their series on Sunday, as Colorado Mesa was able to sneak by and win by a final score of 9-7. It was an offensive battle which went back and forth throughout, but Mesa was able to go ahead late and hold on for the victory.
Â
Mesa jumped out to an early 5-0 lead after scoring one in the first and four in the second, but the Cougars were able to answer as they put up five runs in the bottom half of the second inning to tie the game at 5-5. CCU starter
Danny Graves settled down over his next two innings of work and was able to keep the Mavericks from adding anything to the scoreboard. CCU took the lead for the first time in the series after a ringing RBI double off of the top of the centerfield wall off of the bat of
Austin Atkerson in the fourth inning.
Â
The Mavericks tied the game in the fifth inning, but Colorado Christian grabbed the lead back in the sixth inning as they went ahead by a score of 7-6. Unfortunately, Mesa tied the game again in the seventh, then added a run in both the eighth and ninth innings to win the game by a final of 9-7. The loss gave Mesa the four game series sweep over CCU to open conference play.
Â
Offensively, it was a great game for Colorado Christian. They were able to break out of their recent slump as they knocked out 16 hits in the game. Every CCU starter had at least one hit, and five players had multi-hit efforts in the game.
Brandon Hesselberg finished 3-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
Branden Amenta and
Chance Richardson both went 2-4, and
Pete McWilliams and
Tyler Pollett each finished 2-5.
Â
The loss drops the Cougars record to 5-12 on the year, and 0-4 in conference play. They will be back in action next week (Mar. 11-13) as they will square off against Colorado School of Mines in Golden, CO. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 4PM MST.
