CCU took on New Mexico Highlands University in doubleheader action on Friday in Lakewood, CO. The Cougars were unable to claw out a victory in either game as they lost the first by a score of 5-3, and dropped the second game 7-5. The incoming weather impacted the series, as the final two games will not be played due to the forecast.
Â
Game One:
Game one was started by
Ryan Erazo who had another good outing for the Cougars as he gave them eight innings while striking out six on the day. He and the rest of the Cougar defense ran into some tough luck in the second inning, when Highlands strung together a series of weak base hits which allowed them to score five runs in the inning all with two outs. The only other run the Cowboys were able to muster came in the fourth inning off a single up the middle which gave them a 5-0 lead in the game.
Â
CCU began their comeback attempt in the bottom of the fourth inning highlighted by a to RBI triple off the bat of
Jerry Gallegos which scored
Brandon Hesselberg and
Branden Amenta who had both had hits earlier in the inning. Gallegos came in to score on an RBI groundout from
Austin Atkerson which cut the deficit down to just two as they trailed 5-3. Unfortunately, there would be no more scoring from either side as New Mexico Highlands was able to hold on and win by a 5-3 final score.
Â
Offensively in the game, the Cougars had seven hits in the game.
Jack Nelson had the lone multi-hit effort in the game as he finished 2-3 with a double.
Â
Game Two:
CCU got off to a quick start in the second game as they jumped on the Cowboys early by scoring two runs in the first and second innings which gave them a 4-0 lead heading into the third inning. The first inning runs came on a pair of RBI doubles from
Pete McWilliams and
Jack Nelson. The first run in the second inning came when
Marcus Graves took advantage of a defensive mishap by NMHU. The second run came on an RBI single from
Brandon Hesselberg.
Â
The 4-0 lead would not hold for the Cougars as Highlands scored four runs in the third and once in the fourth to take a 5-4 lead.
Weston Wiederhold tied the game up in the bottom half of the fourth inning as his single to center field drove in
Jerry Gallegos. That would be it for Colorado Christian scoring on the day, as the Highlands' pitching staff held CCU at bay over the course of the final three innings, and their offense scored a pair of runs in the fifth inning to give them the 7-5 lead, which ended up being the final score in the game.
Â
Brandon Hesselberg and
Branden Amenta both finished with two hits in the game as Hesselberg went 2-4 with a double, one run and one RBI, and Amenta went 2-3 with a double and a sacrifice bunt.
Â
The impending weather coming into the Lakewood area has cancelled the final two games of the series which were scheduled for Saturday and Sunday. CCU will be back in action next weekend (Apr. 22-24) as they will travel to Grand Junction, CO to face off against Colorado Mesa University. The series will begin under the lights on Friday with first pitch scheduled for 6:05PM MST. Â Â
