It was another split day for the Cougars as they and Colorado School of Mines put on a show for their fans to see. There wasn't a dull moment in both games three and four of the series. While the Orediggers played hard to get some more wins under their belt before entering the RMAC playoffs, the Cougars were fighting for their lives. CCU won game three 9-7, and then barely lost in the bottom of the eighth inning 6-5 in the fourth game. It was a painful way to end their weekend, but the Cougars played some of the best ball all year in the last game of the series.
Â
Game 3
Â
CCU started down up by one run, and then quickly down by three in the first frame. The Orediggers had some good hits that they were able to execute off of. The second remained scoreless for both teams, and then Colo. Christian woke up.
Â
A scoring series of four runs put them ahead in the top of the third inning 5-4.
Charlotte Romero was able to reach on a fielder's choice, and
Hanna Farmer went home. Next,
Carly Perry singled to center field, and
Kristina Billante scored. At this point, the bases were loaded and
Jennie Winston was walked allowing
Charlotte Romero to get a run.
Stephanie Tatham then reached on an error by the Orediggers pitcher, allowing
Carly Perry to score. It was now blue and gold's game being up 5-4.
Â
What solidified the win was a huge long ball from
Amy Edison flying over the left field fence and scoring three more runs. This was in the fifth inning, and the Cougs had the lead 8-4. Colorado Mines would go on to score one run in each of the next three innings, and CCU would have one in the top of the sixth. The Cougars won the game 9-7 with
Tana Feiner (13-14) taking the victory for herself at the mound. CCU hit two less balls than Mines 11-13 and struck out five more times 7-2, but the Orediggers fielding errors and struggle on the mound, lost them the game.
Â
Game 4
Â
Losing in extra innings is always heartbreaking for a team, but the Cougars journey to the eighth frame was outstanding softball. CCU scored the first run of the game off a failed pick-off attempt to second base where Mine's catcher had a throwing error, and then
Hanna Farmer scored.
Â
In the bottom of the third inning, Christian would have two errors that would allow Colo. Mines to score three unearned runs. Another fielding error in the third frame by the Lady Cougars put Mines up one more run 4-1, and then they were able to get a four run lead on CCU 5-1 in the fourth inning. The game was not going well for blue and gold, and the Orediggers were maximizing on every mistake.
Â
The top of the fourth and fifth were uneventful at the plate for CCU, but the sixth produced a slimmer of hope in the Cougars hearts. There were two outs, and two on base (Romero, Perry). It was a double steal that scored the run.
Carly Perry stole second and
Charlotte Romero stole home. The score was now 2-5.
Rylee Halenar then singled to the right side and
Carly Perry got a run, still with one out to go.
Amy Edison struck out, but there was one more inning in the game and Colorado Christian had all the momentum being down by two 5-3.
Â
Shelby Diffenderfer was pitching for CCU, and shut down Mines offense in the sixth inning keeping them at five runs. The Cougars entered the seventh frame and their first two at bats ended in outs. With one out to go for the Orediggers,
Kristina Billante stepped up to the plate and tripled down the right field line. At this point, Mines would have a pitching change.
Â
The Cougars next two hitters were their best,
Charlotte Romero and
Carly Perry. Romero singled through the right side and Billante scored. Perry singled up the middle and was now on first, while Hailey Novaceck pinch ran for Romero and advanced to second. Mines had a crucial fielding error by their short stop that allowed
Letty Valenzuela to reach, and Novacek to score. CCU had tied it up 5-5 in the top of the seventh inning.
Â
CCU was not able to score any runs in the eighth, and the Orediggers got one off a single to the left side ending the game 6-5 Mines. It was an erred-filled game with the Cougs allowing for three unearned runs, and Colorado Mines allowed four unearned runs.
Shelby Diffenderfer (3-11) gave up 11 hits and three earned runs, striking out one, and walking four. Blue and gold had a total of 10 hits and struck-out five times.
Â
The Cougars ended their season 17-34 overall, and went 16-23 in conference. The playoff teams are yet to be determined, and CCU is still in the mix.
