Colorado Christian made the short commute to Golden, CO on Tuesday night to square off against Colorado School of Mines. CCU walked away with the victory as they were able to defeat Mines by a final score of 7-5. It was a great team win, as they were able to pick up their 10
th win of the season.
Â
CCU got the scoring started early in the game as
Pete McWilliams singled to center field in the first inning to drive in
Branden Amenta and give the Cougars an early 1-0 lead. CSM answered in their half of the first inning as they were able to tie up the game. The score remained tied until the fourth inning when
Brandon Hesselberg had an RBI groundout which scored
Bryce Brenton and gave CCU the lead back at 2-1. It was a lead they would not relinquish, as they continued to add on by scoring three runs in the sixth inning capped off by an RBI triple down the right field line by
Jerry Gallegos. Mines got one back in their half of the inning, but Colorado Christian had a 5-2 lead after six innings of play.
Â
Tyler Pollett had an RBI single in the seventh, and
Bryce Brenton had a sacrifice fly in the 9
th inning to extend their lead to 7-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning. CSM made it interesting in the final inning as they scored three runs which cut the lead down to just two, but
Daniel Bednarski was able to slam the door on any further comeback as he induced a weak fly ball to right field to end the game.
Â
The Cougars finished the game with seven runs and 12 hits and were led in the game by the strong offensive performances from
Jerry Gallegos and
Pete McWilliams. Gallegos finished the game going 3-4 with an RBI, and finished just a homerun away from completing the cycle. McWilliams went 3-5 with one run scored and one RBI.
Tyler Pollett also had a multi-hit effort on the night as he went 2-4.
Â
It was a group effort on the mound for Colorado Christian, as they used nine pitchers in the game in order to keep everyone available for the upcoming weekend series against Metro State.
Danny Graves earned his second win of the season.
Â
The win improves the Cougars record to 10-33 on the year. They will host Metro State this weekend for their final series of the year. The series begins on Thursday May 5
th, as first pitch is scheduled for 3PM MST. Come out to All Star Park all weekend to support the Cougars, and celebrate the seniors on the team as they play their final games in their collegiate careers.
