The Colorado Christian University Cougars hosted the Mountain Lions of University of Colorado at Colorado Springs on Saturday, December 16, looking to make it two wins in a row following the win last week against Black Hills State. The Cougars came into the contest sporting a record of 3-6 (1-3 RMAC), and the Mountain Lions sported a record of 1-8 (1-3 RMAC).
The Mountain Lions jumped out to an early 8-0 lead which would set the tone for the entire first half. Contributing to the Cougars struggles in the first half were turnovers and the Mountain Lions taking advantage of those mistakes. The Cougars committed 12 turnovers, and the Mountain Lions turned those into 13 points. The Cougars would trail going into halftime by a score of 19-34.
The Cougars really took to heart whatever head coach
Corey Laster said in the locker room, as the second half saw the Cougars improve drastically all around. Though the Cougars were still outscored in the 3
rd quarter, 16-14, CCU shot much better and made their first three pointer of the day.
The Cougars ended the third quarter on a 6-0 run bringing the score to 50-33. They kept the roll going in the fourth quarter, opening the period with a deep three pointer. This shot would be the beginning of a completely different CCU team. They would drain three more three pointers and shoot an astonishing 61.5% from the field. Leading the way in the 4
th was freshman forward
Brookelyn Hurlbut who scored all nine of her points in the fourth, spurring the Cougars to outscore the Mountain Lions 27-12 in the quarter.
Unfortunately, the Cougars fell just short of accomplishing what would have been one of the largest comebacks in CCU history. Unable to overcome 22 turnovers and 11 UCCS offensive rebounds, and being down by 20 at one point in the 3
rd quarter, the Cougars would come up two points short and lose to the Mountain Lions 60-62.
Leading the Cougars today was junior
Jordan Baer who scored a game high 23 points, grabbed six boards, and threw in a pair of assists for another well-rounded game by Baer. CCU falls to 3-6 on the season, and 1-4 in RMAC competition. They will take on the Roadrunners from Metro State University on Sunday, December 17
th, at 1:00 p.m.
