Colorado Christian Women's Basketball took to the court again on Saturday December 9
th, still in search of their first RMAC win. After falling to 2-6 overall and 0-3 in conference following a loss to South Dakota School of Mines and Technology the night before, the Cougars would gear up for one of the RMAC's best teams, Black Hills State University. The Yellowjackets came into the game with a record of 8-1 overall and 2-1 in conference.
The Yellowjackets came into the game leading the RMAC in multiple major categories including scoring offense, scoring defense, and field goal percentage. Those stats didn't mean much in the first quarter as the Cougars sprinted out to a 10-0 lead before Black Hills was forced to call a timeout to try to slow things down. Coming off a career night, freshman
Sarah McGinley would keep the scoring going by notching six of those first 10 points on a pair of 3-pointers. The Cougars led 22-12 after the first quarter.
The second quarter saw the Yellowjackets get back into their statistical form, opening with a quick 7-2 run to get back within five of the Cougars, but CCU did not back down and quickly built that lead back up to 10. The second quarter would continue as a back-and-forth event, but the Cougars would go into halftime up 35-28.
Though the Cougars would score 35 by halftime, the real story of the first half was holding the RMAC's highest scoring offense to just 28 points on 38.5% shooting. A combination of tight on-ball defense and timely steals attributed to their first half success.
The third quarter saw the Yellowjackets continue their push to gain control of the game, by outscoring the Cougars 22-16 in the quarter. BHSU would open the second half with an 8-0 run to claim their first lead of the game. The Yellowjackets mounted their comeback on the heels of 7-14 shooting in the quarter, but the Cougars defense was sturdy enough to keep CCU in the lead and the third quarter ended with the Cougars up by one, 50-51.
The fourth quarter was as hotly contested as imagined, with the teams trading buckets, steals, and fouls. As the quarter was coming to an end the Cougars led 68-61 after a string of Cougar free throws. The game wasn't nearly over yet though as the Yellowjackets were not going down without a fight. The Yellowjackets would draw a pair of double bonus free-throws, then two steals and buckets brought the Yellowjackets back to make the score 66-68. The Cougars would calm down after that scramble, drawing a pair of fouls that would result in two Yellowjackets fouling out, and putting the Cougars back up by a score of 68-72. The game would end shortly after a few more Cougar free-throws putting them up by a final score of 74-68.
CCU would claim their first RMAC win of the season, and an impressive one at that. The Cougars held the conference's best offense to 68 points, nearly 10 points under their season average, and to just 40% shooting, which was 5% below their game average. The Cougars were led
Jordan Baer who set the tone with a team high 17 points as well as a game high 11 rebounds. Collectively the Cougars dished out a season high 15 assists to go with their new season high in points.
The Cougars will be back in action next Saturday, December 16
th when they host the UCCS Mountain Lions in Lakewood, CO, tipoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
