Lady Cougs Strong in Sweep Over Pueblo

CCU Softball swept Colorado State University Pueblo on Sunday afternoon in a doubleheader at Lakewood Park. Christian won game one 6-1 and game two 5-1.

Game 1

The Cougs were rock solid in game one against CSUP. Sarah Probasco started on the mound for the Cougs, only allowing one run off five hits, with one strikeout. Kenzie Mattey took the helm part way through the fourth inning and shut down Pueblo with five strikeouts and one hit. The Thunderwolves were no match for Mattey's fast ball that she threw today. Mattey took the win that makes her 4-3 on the year.

Despite Pueblo being the first to score, Christian was the last with six runs in the fourth frame. CCU's Haley Anderson came in to pinch hit for Shelbie Day with Baylee Johnson on third and Stephanie Day on second. Johnson scored the first run for blue and gold off Anderson's single hit to right field. Amy Edison was up to bat next and doubled to center field, running in Shelbie Day (came back in for Anderson), and Stephanie Day. Jennie Winston had a single to third base that became a run down between Pueblo's third baseman and Shelbie Day. Day barely escaped the touch, and scored the third run for the Cougs.

The Lady Cougs were unstoppable. With only one out and three runs down, Hanna Farmer singled to right center, advancing on an error, and getting two RBI's with Jennie Winston and Amy Edison scoring. After a CSUP pitching change, Charlotte Romero doubled to right field allowing Farmer to score. The Cougs had six runs now, and still only one out. CCU had a pop up and fly out to end the inning with the bases loaded.

CCU had nine total hits compared to Pueblo's six, the Cougs only struck out two times, while the Thunderwolves had six. Christian won 6-1.

Game 2

CCU's pitching was resilient in the first game, and then again in the second with Kelsea Sweeney taking the win (5-0). Sweeney struck out four, allowed four hits and one run. Kenzie Mattey (4-3) closed the last two outs in the fourth inning and finished the game. Mattey had no runs against, four hits, and two strikeouts.

The Cougs scored all five runs in the first four innings, with two being scored in the second. Letty Valenzuela hit a homer to left center field in the first inning. Charlotte Romero drilled one to right center, running Jennie Winston across in the second. CSUP scored one run in the third inning, and then CCU's Amy Edison hit another single RBI home run to left field. The final run for the Cougs was in the fourth frame by a Charlotte Romero double to right field, which ran in Hailey Riesenmy in.

Pueblo had seven hits, and the Cougs eight. The Thunderwolves battled the Cougs every inning, but at the end of the day they left 11 on base and could not reach home plate. CCU was strong in every area of their play and radiated confidence on the mound.

This was the first sweep of the season for Colorado Christian. Conference starts this weekend, February 24th & 25th at New Mexico Highlands University.
