Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

CCU Suffers Loss in Final Seconds

CCU Women's Basketball suffered a tender loss on Friday night vs Metro State University 72-70. The Roadrunners almost doubled CCU's score in the first quarter 14-8, but then the Cougs made somewhat of a comeback in the second outscoring Metro 19-15. The third quarter went back into Metro's possession as they went into the fourth up by eight points 56-48.

With a little over two minutes left in the game, the Cougs tied it up for the first time at 68-68. It was the ultimate comeback game with three total runs in the game. CCU was down by 11 in the first and second quarters. Even though they never caught up in the first quarter, they still were able to close the gap. In those final two minutes, Metro sprinted down the court and tried to make a connection, but nothing went in. CCU capitalized off the misses and made their shots count.

In the final minute-and-a-half of the game, the Cougs had possession, and pulled a foul which got them ahead by one point 70-69. Metro one-upped the Cougars and pulled a foul with an "and one" putting them up 72-70. Christian ran down the court and missed the shot, but had the rebound. They scrambled trying to make it work but the shot clock ran down and the ball went loose. Metro screamed for a timeout, but couldn't be heard as the ball struggled between the two opponents. It was called a jump ball, which meant Cougar ball.

Ten seconds was on the clock as Christian tried to find an open body to throw it into. Mikala Gordon had possession, turned around for jumper, but missed short. Leisha Crawford saw the ball and grabbed it immediately as it came down off the hoop. She went for the layup, but missed and the clock ran down to zero. The Roadrunners won 72-70.

Mikala Gordon finished as the leading point score for CCU with 17. Alex Nelson and Claire Paxton both had 15 points, and Paxton led Christian in rebounds with eight. CCU was outshot by Metro, but the Cougs outrebounded MSUD 38-36.

The Final conference game for the Cougs will be vs UCCS at the CCU Event Center on Sat. Feb. 25th. Tip-off is set for 5:00 PM.
