The Cougars comeback came up just short on Saturday afternoon, as they dropped the final game against Oklahoma Panhandle State by a final score of 7-6. After going down early, they fought their way back to tie the game late, but they could not pull ahead. The Cougars still won the series, taking two out of the three on the trip.
Â
The Cougs found themselves in an early hole as the Aggies jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after one inning of play. The score remained 3-0 until the third inning when CCU got one back to trim the deficit down to just two runs. Oklahoma Panhandle answered back as they scored two more in the third, and once more in the fourth which built their lead up to 6-1.
Â
Then the Christian offense picked it up as they attempted to get back into the game.
Jerry Gallegos got the Cougs back into the game as his triple drove in
Kaleb Johnson and
Sam Gallegos.
Austin Maltby followed that with a single to drive in
Jerry Gallegos, which tightened things up as they now trailed 6-4. In the seventh inning, the heart of the lineup came through again beginning with a
Jerry Gallegos double.
Austin Maltby once again drove in Gallegos with a single, and cut the deficit down to a single run. The comeback was completed in the eighth inning, as the Cougs took advantage of errors by the Aggies, which allowed
Dakota Bayles to score and tie the game 6-6.
Â
Unfortunately, it was not meant to be, as the Aggies scored the go ahead run in the bottom of the eighth, then held CCU in the ninth inning.
Â
Austin Maltby finished the game 4-5 with two RBI.
Jerry Gallegos finished a homerun shy of hitting for the cycle by going 3-5 with a double and a triple, with two runs scored and two RBI.
Mikale Doherty also had a good game going 2-5 on the day.
Â
CCU will now return to Colorado as they prepare to open up conference play next weekend against the always talented Colorado Mesa Mavericks. The series will be played in Grand Junction, and will begin on March 3. First pitch is scheduled for 3PM MST. Â
