Game one on the day for the Cougars had them squaring off with the University of Mary Marauders. CCU came out flat once again, falling to the Marauders 5-1. While the Cougar defense looked much improved from yesterday's season opener, it was costly free bases in the form of walks and hit-by-pitches that had them trailing early.
Â
The Cougs' hitters also looked much sharper at the plate piling up 10 hits in the contest but only scoring one run. The offense was paced by CCU Senior
Brandon Hesselberg (3 for 4) and Junior
Kaleb Johnson (2 for 3). Even with 10 hits CCU could not seem to come up with the timely hit as they stranded 12 baserunners in the contest.
Â
It was too much, too early for the Cougars to overcome in game one of the day as they lost their second game of the season. Junior
Brad Benson was saddled with the loss while Freshman
Jarrod Rivera threw four scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
Â
Game two found CCU facing off with the 11
th ranked NAIA team in the country: The Master's College Mustangs. The Cougars came out fired up and ready to play as they finally found their groove and picked up their first W of the season with a final score of 5-3.
Â
The pitching set the pace for the Cougs as Sophomore
Evan Fink got the starting nod and went five innings giving up one run, on two hits, and striking out seven Mustang hitters.Â
Â
The great pitching and defense of CCU set the table for the offense as they struck first in the contest. A
Luke Bote single to right field drove in the first run and was followed up by a
Brandon Hesselberg sacrifice fly to make it 2-0 in the 2
nd.
Â
After trading runs with the Mustangs, the Cougars led 3-1 going into the 5
th. It was in the 5
th that Junior
Scotty Wright (2 for 3) drove a base hit to right field that would eventually score two more runners and give the Cougars all the offense they would need on the night.
Â
After coming up big at the plate, Wright closed the game out on the mound for the Cougars. He accomplished a rare feat of striking out four batters in an inning after a passed ball on the first strikeout of the inning allowed the runner to reach first. Even with the unfortunate allowance of the baserunner, Wright would eventually strike out the side and get the save for the Cougars.
Â
The Cougars claimed a big W against a nationally NAIA ranked team and will now wait to see who they will play tomorrow as a result of the remaining tournament games. Â Â
