Baseball Falls to Regis in Series Finale

Colorado Christian took to their home field in Lakewood on Sunday afternoon to square off against Regis in the series finale. CCU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but Regis fought back to eventually get the victory by a final score of 5-2. With the win, Regis completed the four game sweep of the Cougs.

Michael Cantrell got the start for the Cougars, and gave the team exactly what they needed. Cantrell pounded the zone, and held the Rangers scoreless in the first inning for the first time in the series. After the scoreless top of the first inning, the Cougars took advantage and took their first lead of the series. Austin Maltby provided the first run with an RBI single to drive in Cooper Gray. Then, after Maltby drew the attention of the pitcher on first base, Jerry Gallegos was able to score from third and give CCU the 2-0 advantage.

Regis cut the CCU lead down to one in their half of the second inning, thanks to a homerun. The score remained 2-1 until the top of the fourth inning when the Rangers were able to score the equalizer. Regis then jumped ahead for the first time in the sixth inning as they scored twice, then once more in the seventh inning to take a 5-2 lead over Christian.

CCU did all they could to battle back, but unfortunately were unable to chip away at the lead off of the talented Regis bullpen. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, the Cougars brought the tying run to the plate, but could not push any runs across as a strikeout ended the game.

The Colorado Christian pitching staff did everything they could to keep CCU in striking distance. Michael Cantrell went five innings allowing only three hits, two runs, and struck out three in the game. Freshman Jarrod Rivera pitched the final four innings of the game allowing two hits, and striking out four. Rivera's scoreless inning streak stops at an impressive 19 1/3rd innings.

The team will be back in action next weekend, as they continue conference play when they travel to Colorado Springs to take on UCCS. The four game series will begin on Friday, with first pitch scheduled for 3PM MST.
