Game Recap: Softball |

Probasco Paves the Way for a Win

Colorado Christian Softball split on day one of their series vs Adams State University. Christian was walked all over in the first game losing 9-6, but then retaliated with hard hits and skilled pitching in the second winning 8-1.

Game 1

CCU's Hanna Farmer scored a run in the first inning off a Baylee Johnson double to right field. Adams State made their hits count scoring nine runs off nine hits in game 1.  The Grizzles ran away in the first inning scoring a quick five runs. ASU scored off a triple, three singles, and a CCU error. The Cougars were put in the tough situation of catch-up being down 5-1.

The Cougs collected themselves after the home team's frantic scoring streak in the first. Amy Edison stepped up to the plate and off the first pitch homered to right center field. This was Edison's third home run of the season. With one out, Hayley Novacek tripled, her first of the season, and then Shelbie Day singled, scoring Novacek. Christian closed the gap 5-3 ASU. The Grizzles responded with one run in the second. Both teams went scoreless in the third, and CCU had a ground out and two strikeouts in the fourth.

Adams had a couple more hits in the fourth frame including a three RBI home run to left field. CCU's gap grew to a large five run spread 9-3. The Cougs scored two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth, but fell short 9-6. Letty Valenzuela homered in the 5th, 2 RBI, and then reached on an error in the sixth as Hanna Farmer scored. Sweeney (10-7) took the loss with five strikeouts.

Game 2

A Cougar Victory led by CCU junior-third baseman Letty Valenzuela on offense and CCU freshman-pitcher Sarah Probasco on defense. Valenzuela hit 3-4 with two runs and five RBI! Valenzuela had a single RBI in the third inning to score the first run of the game. She then had a double RBI in the top of the fourth, and homered in the sixth earning another two RBI. Also on offense, Hanna Farmer scored three runs, Shelbie Day tripled, and Jennie Winston hit a homer to left center in the fifth inning (RBI).

Sarah Probasco (4-7) started for the Cougs and absolutely dominated on the mound. The freshman pitcher from Longview, WA threw one of her best games this season with seven total strikeouts, allowing only one run off nine hits through seven innings. With Probasco throwing heat on the mound, Valenzuela swinging hard at the plate, and five major fielding errors by the Grizzlies, CCU was bound to take the win.

Adams had their solo run in the fifth inning, and ended up leaving 10 players on base. They had a big chance to score in the bottom of the second inning with the bases loaded, but the Cougs got the out at home, Valenzuela to Edison. CCU won the game 8-1 and split with ASU on the first day of their series.

The Lady Cougs will be back at Adams State University on Saturday, April 15th for 11:00 & 1:00 PM games.
