Baseball Falls to Mines to Open Series

Colorado Christian took on Colorado School of Mines on Saturday afternoon for the first two games of a four game series. Mines used their offense to get by the Cougs in game one by a score of 19-9, and then again in game two as they defeated CCU by a final score of 11-2.

Game One:
The Cougars stumbled out of the starting gates during the first game, as they allowed two early runs to the Orediggers which gave them the early lead. However, they were able to respond in a big way, as they answered with four runs of their own to snatch the lead away after one inning of play. The highlight of the inning came when Austin Maltby delivered with two runners on base as his homerun gave CCU the lead.

Mines regained control in the second inning by scoring five runs to give them the 7-4 lead. CCU once again responded, but could only tally one run in response.

The middle innings belonged to CSM, as they score a combined total of 11 runs in the 4th-6th innings, which gave them the commanding lead over Christian. The Cougs attempted to get back into the game, but were repeatedly shut down by the Orediggers pitching staff. Mines was able to cruise to the 19-9 victory in the game.

Despite the lopsided score, the CCU offense did everything they could to keep their team in the game. Both Jerry Gallegos and Scotty Wright finished the game going 3-5 with one run scored and two RBI a piece. Austin Maltby finished 2-4 with three RBI. Cooper Gray also had a multi-hit effort in the game, as the speedy leadoff man finished 2-5 with two runs scored.

Game Two:
The second game of the doubleheader started much different than the first as both starting pitchers were able to hold the opposing offense in check early on. Quinn Hunter got the start for the Cougs in the game, and was magnificent early on. Hunter worked a perfect first inning while striking out the side. Four of the first five outs he recorded were strikeouts.

After going scoreless in the first two innings, both teams were able to get on the board as they each tallied one run in the third inning. Then Mines was able to pull away from CCU in the fourth inning after they scored eight runs in the inning to grab a 9-1 lead. Colorado Christian tried to answer back, but it proved to be too much as they fell by a final score of 11-2.

Luke Bote was perfect at the plate in the second game going 3-3 with a run scored. Bryce Brenton went 2-3 with a double, one run scored, and one RBI.

The Cougs will wrap up the series with the School of Mines on Sunday afternoon with another doubleheader. The games will be held at All Star Park in Lakewood, and first pitch is set for 1PM MST.
