Maltby, CCU All Smiles After Walk-Off Win

Colorado Christian traveled to Grand Junction for the weekend, where they will be taking on School of Mines, and Colorado Mesa. The Cougs began the series on Friday afternoon against Mines, and after a furious late inning rally, CCU ended up on top as they pulled out the victory by a final score of 14-13. With just four innings left to play, Christian trailed by 10 runs as they were down 12-2, but were able to complete the improbable comeback and earn the hard fought conference victory.

Evan Fink got the start for the Cougs on the day and began the game well, as he worked a perfect first inning to retire Mines in order. Then the Cougar offense gave Fink the early lead when they came up in the bottom of the first. Cooper Gray got the party started as he led off the inning by hitting his first homerun of the season down the left field line. One batter later, Scotty Wright showed off his power as he also left the yard to give CCU the early 2-0 lead.

After the first inning, CSM took the game over and all of the momentum as they scored twice in the second inning to tie the game up. Mines then scored once in the third, four more times in the fourth, and five runs in the fifth to take a commanding lead 12-2 after five innings of play.

Kaleb Johnson got the Cougar comeback going in the sixth inning as he singled up the middle to score Alex Ginn. Bryce Brenton followed that with an RBI double to score Austin Maltby. Dakota Bayles hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning as well, which cut the Orediggers lead down, as they now trailed 12-5. Mines answered in the seventh inning by scoring a single run, but then the CCU pitching staff was able to shut down the Oredigger offense, and did not allow them score in the final two innings.

Colorado Christian still had some work to do to get back into the game, and in the seventh inning they continued their comeback attempt. After Jerry Gallegos scored off of a balk by the Mines pitcher, Dillon Mctague doubled deep to left centerfield which allowed Austin Maltby and Scotty Wright to score. However, after seven innings of play, they still trailed by 5 at 13-8. Scotty Wright singled home Dakota Bayles in the eighth inning, which brought the Cougs within four. Alex Ginn kept things rolling as he brought home Scotty Wright and Cooper Gray with a single up the middle. Kaleb Johnson singled down the right field line which scored Brad Benson who had pinch ran for Ginn. After eight innings, the Cougars trailed by a single run 13-12.

Owen Harris came in to pitch the ninth inning, and held the Orediggers scoreless. It all came down to the bottom of the ninth, which started out perfect for the CCU after Cooper Gray led the inning off with a single. Jerry Gallegos followed Gray with a walk, which put the game winning run on base. Scotty Wright put down a sacrifice bunt, which allowed Gray to get to third and Gallegos to second. Sam Gallegos came up next, but was unable to get the ball in play as he struck out for the second out of the inning. Austin Maltby was next up, and was looking to be the hero. Maltby jumped on the first pitch and singled to centerfield, which allowed Cooper Gray to score the tying run, and Jerry Gallegos to score the winning run, as the Cougs were walk-off winners by a final score of 14-13.

The Cougars continued to remain hot offensively, as they combined for 17 hits in the game. Cooper Gray finished the game 3-5 with three runs scored, and one RBI. Scotty Wright also had three hits in the game going 3-4 with three runs scored, and two RBI. Both Austin Maltby and Kaleb Johnson went 2-5 with two RBI in the game. Alex Ginn and Dillon Mctague each finished 2-4. Owen Harris picked up his third win of the season, after working a scoreless ninth inning in relief.

Colorado Christian is now on a roll in conference play, as they have won six of their last nine games. They will be back in action on Saturday, as they take on Colorado School of Mines for their first game. First pitch with Mines is scheduled for 12PM MST. Then they will take on Colorado Mesa for their second game of the day. That game is scheduled for 3:30PM MST.
