#6 Colorado Christian defeated #3 Metro State University 6-4 in the first round of the RMAC Tournament on Thursday morning. The Cougars were outstanding from the second they stepped their cleats on the field. It was arguably one of the best performances form blue and gold all season long.
Â
Christian's history with the Roadrunners has been subpar since they started competing against each other in 2013. With many of their games against each other cancelled over the years due to weather, CCU has gone only 2-9 against MSUD. This colossal post-season win gives the Cougars their third victory ever over Metro State.
Â
CCU had 11 hits and MSUD totaled 10, with both teams dropping two errors in the field, one being detrimental for the Roadrunners. Colo. Christian was the away team and had the opportunity to score first. It was an easy two runs in the first inning.
Charlotte Romero and
Baylee Johnson hit singles, and then
Letty Valenzuela doubled to right center field allowing Romero and Johnson to score. Metro hustled in two runs also in the bottom of the first.
Â
The second and third frames consisted of easy putouts and each team left only one player on base. The top of the fourth was CCU's three-run inning. It started with a good short game to get
Stephanie Day to second base.
Jennie Winston SAC bunt. CCU Catcher,
Amy Edison then doubled to left center and Day scored.
Hayley Novacek then singled to left field, and Edison advanced to third.
Shelbie Day singled to shortstop, giving the Cougars three on base.
Hanna Farmer stepped up to bat and hit it right to third base where the error occurred. Novacek and Edison scored, while
Shelbie Day was out at second. CCU now led Metro 5-2.
Â
The talented Metro squad was not down after this blue and gold three-run inning. They retaliated with a run in the fourth and another in the fifth. Christian only led by one run 5-4 going into the final seventh inning.
Â
CCU's starting pitcher
Kelsea Sweeney was pulled in the fourth frame with one out to go. Sweeney threw 3.2 innings allowing seven hits, three runs, with three strikeouts.
Kenzie Mattey came in for Sweeney and threw 2.1 innings allowing three hits and one run, claiming the game win.
Sarah Probasco closed the game and took the save throwing in the bottom of the seventh with two strikeouts. It was an incredible team performance from the Cougar pitching squad.
Â
Leading off for Christian in the top of the seventh was First Team All-RMAC player
Hanna Farmer. The Cougs were in a prime spot to make something happen. Farmer did not disappoint with a double hit down the right field line. Easy enough,
Charlotte Romero stepped up to bat and hit a single to center field allowing Farmer to score. Metro found a way to shut the inning down with two Cougars on base. Freshman
Sarah Probasco impressed everyone on the mound as she struckout two Roadrunners swinging, and produced an easy foul out to left fielder
Shelbie Day. Colorado Christian won 6-4.
