Cougs fall to #6 Cal Baptist

The Colorado Christian Baseball team traveled to Riverside, CA, for a three game series against the 6th ranked Lancers of California Baptist University. The Cougars came into tonight's matchup with a record of 2-2 after a four game tournament in Texas last week, while the Lancers were 2-1 after taking a series win against California State Dominguez Hills.

The Cougars fell behind early when the Lancers took the lead in the bottom of the second off a bases loaded walk. The Lancers doubled up that lead in the bottom of the second with a lead off homer run. CBU would score again in the 3rd off a sac fly to bring the score to 3-0. The final run would come in the bottom of the 6th during a series of plays that led to an unearned run scoring from 3rd off an errant throw.

The Cougars nearly mounted a comeback in the top of the 4th, when Hunter Hays started the two-out rally with a single to right center field. That was followed by a pair of walks worked by McTague and Wright to load the bases. As the potential leading run up to bat, third basemen Joel Manzano worked up to a full count, but grounded out to second for the second time in two plate appearances.

Starting pitcher Bayley Chesterton threw 4.2 strong innings in his hometown, allowing just two earned runs and striking out three, but as he neared 100 pitches on the night, he was relieved by junior Zach Haning. Haning would close out the fifth and sixth for the Cougars, striking out one and allowing no earned runs. Michael Cantrell would finish the game for the Cougars, striking out two more and allowing only one hit in two innings.

The Cougars take on the Lancers again tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. MST (6:00 p.m. PST) for the second of three games against the Lancers.
