Cougars Swept By Lancers

The Cougars took on the Lancers for their third and final game in Riverside, CA, after dropping the first two games 4-0 and 5-4. The Cougars were looking to avoid the sweep against the Lancers and begin to work back to .500 on the year.

The Cougars sent junior right hander Evan Fink to the rubber looking to duplicate last night starter Joey Loranger's hot start. Unfortunately, Fink's day would be rough from the start, allowing two runs in the first inning, and seven over all before coming out of the game after 3 and 2/3 innings, being replaced by Zach Haning. Haning inherited a bases loaded situation with two outs, but worked his way out of it without giving up any more runs in the 4th inning. Haning would stay in for the fifth inning, but would give up two more runs off a 1 out double down the left field line to bring the score to 9-0 in favor of the Lancers.

CCU turned to junior righty Brad Benson into the game at pitcher in the bottom of the 6th, and did well to cool the Lancers hot bats and not allowing a run for the first time since the 2nd inning.

In the top of the 7th inning the Cougars showed they weren't going down quietly and got themselves on the score board. Dakota Bayles doubled to lead off the inning, the next two Cougars would fly out and pop out. Lead-off batter Hunter Hays worked a walk to put runners on first and second for Jerry Gallegos who would single to drive in Bayles making the score 9-1.

Scotty Wright came in to pitch in the bottom of the 7th and struck out the side on 14 pitches. The bottom of the 8th started out strong with another strike out, but eventually an error would lead to an unearned run, and a double and single leads to another earned run driving the score up to 11-1.

Jerry Gallegos and Alex Ginn both had two hits in the game, with Gallegos notching the lone RBI. Scotty Wright went 5-9 with a pair of walks in the series, also getting one run and two RBI's.

The Cougars record drops to 2-5 as they prepare for their first home series of the year against the Falcons from Texas Permian-Basin in Lakewood's All-Star Park on Friday February 23rd, at 1:00 p.m.
