CCU Softball swept CSU-Pueblo in their home opener on Sunday afternoon. The first game ended 9-1 and the second 13-5 (both in early innings due to run-rule).
Game 1:
In the Cougars first game of the day, CCU only went through five innings ending in run-rule which means the game ends if one team is up by eight runs after five innings. The Cougs scored in every inning except the third, where the Thunderwolves scored their solo run of the game. Pueblos run was off a CCU throwing error to first base that allowed Pueblo's runner from second to score.
CCU totaled nine hits in the first game that did some major damage vs the Thunderwolves. Third base
Stephanie Day singled in the first inning, RBI.
Baylee Johnson doubled in her pinch hitting debut in the second, RBI. Catcher
Amy Edison hit a home running, 2 RBI. Then designated player
Charlotte Romero doubled, RBI and first base
Shelby Fusich homered, 2 RBI, all in the fourth inning. Pinch runner
Carly Perry was on second and scored the last run of the game off a
Hanna Farmer single to first base.
Kenzie Mattey (5-0) was on the mound for the Cougs and only gave up two hits through five innings. Mattey struck out eight with zero earned runs.
Game 2:
The second game of the day was action-packed as the Cougars had 13 runs off 13 hits and Pueblo totaled five runs of seven hits. There was a total of five errors in the field between the two teams.
Christian jumped out strong and scored five runs in the first inning. They managed to one-up their own offensive performance in the first as they scored six runs in the bottom of the third frame. Meanwhile Pueblo's hitting had improved, but only gave them two runs on the scoreboard going into the top of the fourth while blue and gold totaled 11 runs.
Pueblo went nil in the fourth inning while CCU managed one more run in the bottom. The Cougs led 12-2 at this point in the game being led by freshman pitcher
Jennifer Romero. Romero was relieved in the fifth inning by sophomore
Sarah Probasco.
Pueblo had one single and two doubles in the top of the fifth that scored three runs. But the Cougars weren't phased. Not with the way their bats at been swinging all day. In the bottom of the fifth CCU's DP
Charlotte Romero hit a sac fly that allowed
Hanna Farmer to score the final run of the game ending it 13-5 after five.
Every member of the Cougar squad had a good day vs the Thunderwolves. CCU hit .449% as a team while Pueblo only .220%.
Charlotte Romero and
Shelby Fusich had four RBIs each, and
Hanna Farmer totaled four runs.
The Cougars will play their opening conference games at home vs New Mexico Highlands next weekend Feb. 24
th and 25
th at Lakewood Park. First pitch is set for 12:00 PM Saturday.
