Cougars Complete the Sweep

Lady Cougs Complete the Sweep vs New Mexico Highlands

The #17 (Hero Sports) ranked Lady Cougs softball team completed a four game sweep of New Mexico Highlands on Sunday in La Junta, CO.  The Cougars started the day off on the right foot winning game one in 5 innings by a final score of 10-2. CCU got the scoring started early in the game scoring three runs in the 2nd inning and three runs in the 3rd inning.

Leading the way for the Cougars offensively was first baseman Carly Perry who despite only having one hit, had 4 RBI in the game.  Also, adding to the offensive output was right fielder Alyssa Hanks going 2 for 3, scoring two runs, and adding 2 RBI. Kenzey Mattey moved to 7-0 on the year after only giving up two runs on four hits.

The second game was more of the same for the Lady Cougs as they ended up scoring nine runs on their way to a 9-4 win.  After finding themselves down three runs after the first half inning, the Cougars quickly answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning.

This was thanks to a three run homerun from second baseman Stephanie Day(2-3, two runs, 3 RBI). The Cowgirls and Cougars traded runs and were tied going into the bottom of the 4th and that's when CCU pulled away.

It was to the tune of another three run homerun but this time off the bat of first baseman Carly Perry.  Perry in the two games on the day had 7 RBI and was a huge part of the Cougars four game sweep this weekend. Kaci Burger also added three hits and two runs in game two to ensure a victory for CCU. Jennifer Romero picked up the win going four innings, giving up three earned runs and moved to 4-1 on the young season.

The Lady Cougs, now 11-1 overall and 4-0 in RMAC play, will look to continue their winning ways as they will travel to Durango, CO next weekend to take on  the Fort Lewis Skyhawks.
