Gallegos Gets Hit #200 In Victory

It was a cold, windy day at All Star Park in Lakewood, CO, today as Colorado Christian prepared for their final game against the Thunder of Manhattan Christian College. The Cougars had taken the first two games of the series and were looking for their first sweep of the year, and found it after a convincing 26-4 victory.

Highlighting the day was redshirt senior Jerry Gallegos who collected his 200th hit of his career, joining only former Cougar players Chad Barnhill (236) and Michael Cavazos (207) in the CCU 200-hit club. His milestone knock came in the bottom of the 4th inning when he doubled down the left field line, driving in JC Barrios to put the Cougars up 13-4 at the time. A moment of recognition was taken before the next batter, Austin Maltby, stepped into the box and drove Gallegos home to a well-deserved ovation. Gallegos has worked long and hard to achieve this milestone, starting back in 2015 when Jerry started his first game ever at CCU and singled in the top of the third inning for his first hit.

All four of MCC's runs would come in the top of the first inning, with CCU starter Scotty Wright only allowing one earned run on two hits, while striking out three and walking two. The Cougar pitching staff would roll six deep in today's seven inning contest, allowing a combined total of three hits, three walks, and striking out 12 MCC hitters.

The Cougars would not have an empty scoring frame on the day, never scoring less than three, and topping out at eight in the bottom of the 6th inning. CCU would have 13 different players notch a hit in the contest, with 13 of them recording at least one RBI, seven of which had multiple RBI's, and 13 Cougars scored runs, seven of which had multiple.

Shining bright on this cloudy day was Austin Maltby, who went 4-4 from the plate today, including a triple and a homerun, with 5 RBI's and 2 runs. Maltby was just a double short of a cycle in today's contest. Maltby had arguably the best offensive series. In three games Maltby went 6-9 with 3 runs scored and 8 RBI's. He also drew three walks and struck out only once.

Cooper Gray, who had a great overall series, capped it off by going 1-5 on the day, but scoring 5 runs by reaching base on errors a few times, and drove in 3 more RBI's. Gallegos' stat line was also impressive for the day, going 2-3 with 3 RBI's and 2 runs scored. JC Barrios had a good day statistically, though he will feel it tomorrow morning, after he went 2-2 at the plate but also took two balls to the body to earn free bases, he would drive in 1 RBI, but score 4 runs on the day.

The Cougars record improved to 6-8 after this weekend's series, and the Cougars will take their four-game win streak to Denver next week as they travel to Regis University for four games in three days as they begin the bulk of their RMAC schedule. Their first game is on Friday, March 16th, at 3:00 p.m.
