17 Straight Wins for Cougars

Colorado Christian Softball completed their four-game series sweep vs Black Hills State on Sunday afternoon as they won game three 10-2 and game four 6-4.  The Cougs are on a 17 game winning streak and are 19-1 overall, 12-0 in conference.

Game 3
Despite the fact that the Cougars won in run-rule 10-2, the Yellowjackets were the first to score a run in the top of the first inning.  CCU's ace Kenzie Mattey (11-0) was on the mound and even though it was a rocky start for the redshirt junior, Mattey recovered quickly and only allowed six more hits, one earned run, with four strikeouts.
CCU Softball stayed consistent at the plate as they totaled nine hits.  It didn't take long for a Cougar rebuttal after Black Hills run in the first inning.  In the bottom of the first inning CCU displayed some serious teamwork as they pushed leadoff hitter Hanna Farmer all the way around the bases to score.  Farmer singled to reach first, stole second, reached third off a Kendall Yasui sac bunt, and then reached home from Charlotte Romero's ground out to second. The score didn't remain tied for long though as Christian scored two more runs in the second frame, five in the third, and two in the fourth.

CCU junior center fielder Hanna Farmer went 3-4 with two runs and three RBI.  Farmer also totaled two stolen bases.  Freshman shortstop Kacie Burger hit a home run in the third inning, 3 RBI, and both Charlotte Romero and Carly Perry hit well with 2 RBI each.

One of the best parts of the Cougar squad this season is their depth.  Coach Hays has some defensive studs in the field allowing for quick outs and variety vs their opponents.

Game 4

The final game of the series started off with a bang for Christian as they scored four runs in the first inning. Hanna Farmer reached first, stole second.  Junior DP Charlotte Romero then doubled to center field running in Farmer.  Junior first baseman Shelby Fusich singled.  Then sophomore Stephanie Day, playing third in this game, hit a huge home run, way pass the fence in center field to score Romero and Fusich.  CCU had a comfortable lead at 4-0.  After the first inning the game was uneventful.

Freshman pitcher Jennifer Romero was on the mound.  The Yellowjackets next four innings totaled three hits, with four left on base.  And then in the bottom of the fifth inning CCU scored another run.  It looked like the Cougars had the game in the bag with a 5-0 lead.  But in the sixth frame Black Hills went on a run.  Romero could have run out of steam, or BH's bats were just hot, but the Yellowjackets hit four singles in a row with no outs and one run.

Coach Hays pulled Romero and put Kenzie Mattey back on the mound for the save.  With the bases loaded the Yellowjackets hit two more singles scoring three more runs.  The score was now 5-4 and zero outs.  It was the first time in conference play that the Cougars were under some pressure.  Black Hill's next three batters flied out (incredible diving catch by left fielder Kendall Yasui), flied out, and then lined out to end the stressful inning.

The Cougs scored one more run in the bottom of the sixth inning and then Mattey shut down the game in the top of the seventh with a ground out to Stephanie Day at third base and two strikeouts.  CCU won the game 6-4.

Black Hills out-hit the Cougars 9-7 in the final game, but CCU's defense was too strong for them to outscore the Cougs.  Jennifer Romero (8-1) walked away with the win and Kenzie Mattey had the save (1).
