The Cougars did it again and notched two more wins to their record as they defeated UCCS 13-3 and 11-2 in games 1 and 2 of their weekend series.
Colorado Christian Softball is improving each and every game and when you only have two losses on the season people start to notice. Cougar fans, the RMAC, and even regionally--CCU Softball is getting recognition, but nationally CCU has yet to see a vote in the polls. The Lady Cougs are sitting at an incredible 27-2 overall record and 18-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, and they rank second in the nation in batting average (right behind Colorado Mesa- another RMAC opponent who is currently #1 in NCAA DII Softball rankings).
Regardless of the polls, Colorado Christian's focus is on the game. Talk about a competitive group of young athletes. This squad is relentless and Head Coach
Shanon Hays is guiding them each and every step.
In their two games vs the Mountain Lions, CCU won in run rule. They totaled 24 runs off 22 hits, batting .478% with 7 doubles and 3 home runs, including two grand slams. All three home runs came in the first game starting with right fielder
Alyssa Hanks who hit a grand slam to right center. Then first baseman
Shelby Fusich homered-grand slam in the second inning, and shortstop
Kacie Burger hit a two-run home run in the fourth frame.
On top of the three home runs, CCU had two scoring doubles, one by
Alyssa Hanks (RBI) and then the other was by left fielder
Kendall Yasui which was a ground rule double scoring two runs. The Cougars ace,
Kenzie Mattey was on the mound and only gave up three runs off two hits, earning a 1.40 ERA and her 14
th win of the season.
Starting in the second game on the mound for the Cougs was freshman
Jennifer Romero. Romero had three hits off of her which scored two runs. She posted a 1.75 ERA.
The Cougars had all the momentum in game 2 and did not let up. In the bottom of the third inning, Christian scored nine runs which included four doubles in a row. The Mountain Lions were defeated.
