Game Recap: Softball |

Weekend Ends Short for Cougs with Two Wins

Colorado Christian Softball came out with two wins on Friday afternoon vs Chadron State College.  The Cougars planned to play two games on Thursday and two games on Friday but due to weather they were only able to fit in a two-game weekend series vs the Eagles.

CCU shutout Chadron in the first game 7-0.  Kenzie Mattey was on the mound for blue and gold and threw a complete game and only allowed four hits, no runs, only one walk, and 11 total strikeouts.  The Cougs really put pressure on the Eagles on defense and on offense.  Chadron's defense made four errors in the game that allowed four unearned runs for CCU.

Coming in at first base for Christian was senior #3 Jennie Winston.  Winston came in clutch for the Cougs at the plate with a single hit and 2 RBI.  Pinch hitter #12 and also a CCU senior, Letty Valenzuela also did a great job at the plate with a two-run single to get the Cougars on the scoreboard.  Valenzuela won the Cougars final game last weekend against UCCS in extra innings with a walk-off single.

CCU totaled nine hits in game one and in game two they topped it with 11 hits.  Game two started with the Cougars scoring one run in the top of the first inning.  Chadron then scored a run in the bottom third.  Then CCU scored two runs in the fifth and Chadron two runs in the sixth.  The score was tied 3-3 going into the seventh inning.  It was a high-pressure situation for the Cougars and they came through with three runs in the top of the seventh inning.  And then for the second time in one day Kenzie Mattey took the win as she closed down the Eagles in the bottom of the seventh with no hits and no runners on base.

The Cougs had some big hits with three doubles, a triple, and a home run in the game.  Stephanie Day and Kendall Yasui hit perfect games.  Yasui went 4-4 with 2 runs and Stephanie Day went 2-2, with 2 runs and 2 RBI.

The Lady Cougs grabbed their 30th win of the season at 30-3, and 21-1 in conference play.  Stay updated on the Cougars game schedule via ccucougars.com or @ccucougars twitter, instagram
