Baseballs Saturday doubleheader turned into a single game due to inclement weather overnight and into Saturday morning, but the snow couldn't cool off the Cougars as they took game two from the Orediggers in convincing fashion, winning 9-1 in Golden. The win boosts CCU's record to 16-20 (11-15 RMAC) as they sit just three and a half games behind UCCS for the final RMAC playoff spot.
Starting on the mound for CCU was junior right hander
Evan Fink who had his best game of the season thus far, and at the perfect time for his team. Fink, who came into the game with two previous wins in conference play, earned the victory in convincing fashion holding the Orediggers to just six hits (.222 BA) and one unearned run while striking out five and walking just two.
The Cougar hitters gave Fink breathing room early on, scoring three runs in the 1
st inning scoring on a
Scotty Wright single, a wild pitch, and a
Dakota Bayles ground out. They added two more runs in the 2
nd inning with two outs as
Scotty Ingle scored on Wright's double to left field followed by
Austin Atkerson's RBI double to right field that brought Wright home.
The game would turn into a pitcher's duel for the next four and a half innings with both teams combining for just four hits and four strikeouts. In the top of the 7
th inning the Cougars were back at their hitting ways, scoring a pair of runs on three hits. Atkerson singled up the middle and would advance to third when the next batter,
Austin Maltby, doubled to left center. Atkerson would come home when
Hunter Hays singled to right center, sending Maltby to third.
Dakota Bayless would drive in Maltby on a sacrifice hit next at bat, building the lead to 7-0.
CCU would add another in the top of the 8
th inning when
Jerry Gallegos grounded out to second, giving
Scotty Ingle enough time to make it home safely. The final Cougar run came in the top of the 9
th inning when
Austin Maltby advanced to third off a
Hunter Hays single after getting on base by hit-by-pitch. Maltby would cross home plate when the next batter,
Dillon Mctague hit a sacrifice fly to left field.
Colorado School of Mines only run came in the bottom of the 8
th inning with the bases loaded. The Orediggers would take advantage of Finks lone mistake in the game when a wild pitch allowed the runners to advance, scoring one.
After the game Coach Mucerino reflected on the win saying, "When we have a quality outing like the one we got from Evan today, we always have a good chance to win. These last two games have shown what we are capable of when we play consistent ball to the best of our team's ability."
Austin Atkerson led the Cougars at the plate, going 3-5 on the day with an RBI and two runs scored. Wright, Maltby, and Hays each added another two hits each, with Wright accounting for a pair of RBI's and runs, Maltby scoring two runs, and Hays claiming an RBI. Bayles, Gallegos, and Mctague combined for four RBI's, while
Scotty Ingle and
Cooper Gray added two and one runs respectively.
The Cougars will finish out the series with a doubleheader on Sunday. The first game is set for a 12:00 p.m. first pitch, with the second coming roughly 30 minutes after the completion of the first.
