CCU Baseball dropped their last game of the pod weekend 10-6 to Colorado School of Mines on Monday afternoon. The Cougars went 1-3 on the weekend, picking up their only win on Saturday against the Orediggers. The final game of the weekend was back and forth between CCU and CSM until the Orediggers opened it up in the late innings. The Cougars got on the board in the 4
th inning after an
Austin Atkerson single scored
Jerry Gallegos from 2
nd base, making the score 3-1 Mines. It was the 5
th inning though that allowed CCU to jump out in front 4-3. The inning saw Cooper Grey triple to right center, Hunter Hayes double to left field, and
Scotty Wright single to left field, all of which scored runners for the Cougars. Starting pitcher
Bayley Chesterton exited in the bottom half of the 5
th inning after only giving up three hits and two earned runs. It was bases on balls that shortened the day for Chesterton however (six total), and made way for
Jarrod Rivera to enter the game in relief of Chesterton.
CCU scratched a run across in the 7
th to take the lead after
Jerry Gallegos grounded out to the first baseman scoring
Joel Manzano who led the inning off with a single. Colorado School of Mines had an answer though scoring two in the bottom half of the inning and regaining the lead. Â The Cougar offense got back to work in the 8
th scoring one run off a
Luke Bote single to tie it up at 6-6, but missed out on more runs after having the bases loaded with two outs and not pushing another run across. It was the bottom half of the 8
th that doomed the Cougars. Miscues by CCU and timely hitting by the Orediggers resulted in four runs crossing the plate and School of Mines having a 10-6 lead, which would end up being the final score. Opportunities presented themselves to the Cougars throughout the game but CCU could just not capitalize to come away with a win against the #1 RMAC team.
Jarrod Rivera was saddled with the loss and Chesterton got the no decision after going 4.1 innings. The Cougars drop to 14-16 overall and 9-11 in RMAC play. Colorado Christian gets right back at it this weekend in a vital series against CSU Pueblo with the first game of the series set for Friday at 3:30pm.
