Cougars Avenge Loss to Southwestern

The CCU baseball team played a rematch of their third game of the season today, a game that they dropped by a score of 4-9 to the Southwestern Christian University Eagles. Today was a different ending to a similar story, this time with the Cougars ending on top with a decisive 11-2 victory.

The game got off to a fast start, with SCU scoring on a homerun in the top of the 1st inning to take an early 0-1 lead. The Cougars didn't let that lead sit for long as they scored three in the bottom half of the 1st inning, taking advantage of a Scotty Wright double and an Eagle error that allowed two runs to score.

CCU added another run in the bottom of the 2nd inning when Scotty Ingle singled to center, and was brought home after the next batter, Cooper Gray, doubled to deep left field, scoring Ingle easily. With the score at 4-1 in favor of the Cougars after just two innings, the game would go quiet for a short while. Only one hit would be recorded in the next two innings until the Cougars came back to the plate with the top of their line up in the bottom of the 5th inning.

Gray laced another double to lead off the bottom of the 5th, this time down the right field line. After the next batters flew out and grounded out, Gray pushed the pace by stealing third, scoring easily when Austin Atkerson sent the ball into the right center gap. Quinn Hunter came in to pinch run for Atkerson and scored from first when Austin Maltby doubled to deep right field. With the Cougars lead now increased to 6-1 and the game entering the 6th inning, the Cougar had their revenge win well within reach.

Southwestern would collect a pair of hits in the top of the 6th inning and load the bases with a walk but would leave all three runners stranded when a double-play ended their momentum. The bottom of the 6th inning saw the Cougars score five runs on seven hits, highlighted by a Scotty Ingle triple and a Cooper Gray 2-run homerun. The Cougars would notch four extra base hits and three singles in the inning, pushing the lead to 11-1.

The Eagles would plate one more run in the top of the 7th inning, but it was too little too late as the Cougars would take the game by the final score of 11-2 in the seven-inning game.

Offensively, CCU had five players with multiple hits in the game, led by senior Cooper Gray who went 3-3 on the day scoring three runs, bringing in 3 RBI's and working a walk. Jerry Gallegos, Atkerson, Maltby, and Ingle each had two hits apiece and accounted for five runs and RBI's combined.

Evan Fink started the game for CCU and went six innings deep, allowing just one run on five hits. Even though there was no save opportunity, Zach Haning got an inning of work to close out the game, and allowed one run on one hit and struck out one batter in the single inning of action he saw.

The Cougars will play again on Friday, May 11th at 2:00 p.m. MDT against an opponent that will be determined by the winner of the game immediately preceding their own at 11:30 a.m. MDT. Follow along with live stats on ccucougars.com.
