The greatest softball season in CCU history has officially come to a close. The record year was ended after two hard fought games in the NCAA Regionals in San Angelo, Texas. Cameron University from Lawton, Oklahoma, dealt the Cougars the loss in their final game of the season.
Â
Both teams were competing with the fate of their season on the line – win and they advance to the semis, or lose and they are done. After a neck and neck game, the Aggies took the win with a final score of 4-3.
Â
With three groundouts in a row to start the game, CCU was off to a slow start. The first batter in the lineup for Cameron landed a homerun to get the team going, and put the Aggies up 1-0 going into the 2
nd. Just like the first inning, the Cougars only got in three batters before they had three quick outs. CU took the momentum they had built and scored another run to make the score 2-0.
Â
Reaching first after getting hit by the pitch,
Amy Edison was brought home after a double down the left line from
Carly Perry to put CCU on the board. The Cougars then gained some momentum of their own which they carried into the defense. With a runner on first,
Amy Edison made a throw to
Carly Perry at second from behind the plate which caught the runner stealing. With a strikeout and lineout from
Kenzie Mattey, the Cougs were on to battle in the 4
th.
Â
The top of the 4
th started with a pair of singles from
Charlotte Romero and
Stephanie Day to put runners on 1
st and 2
nd. With
Kacie Burger in to pinch run from Romero,
Alyssa Hanks worked her magic and hit a sac bunt to advance the runners to 2
nd and 3
rd.
Shelby Fusich stepped up to the plate and hit a 2 RBI single, giving the Cougars the lead.
Â
Cameron came into the 5
th and tied up the game with another run to put the pressure on. Their defense held the Cougars from scoring in the 6
th, and their strategic plays at the plate landed them another run in the bottom of the inning to take the lead and also the final run of the game, 4-3.
Â
Not giving up yet, the Cougars had two runners on but were unable to score. The inning started strong after a double from
Amy Edison, followed by
Hanna Farmer with a walk. However the Aggies defense was able to get out of the inning unscathed and onto the next round against West Texas A&M.
Â
The 2018 season ended with an overall record of 43-15, and 30-8 in conference play. With the home field advantage, the Cougs only gave up two losses on their turf. Leaving some big roles to fill, seven seniors will hang their hats on this incredible year. The team however is aiming at an even better year for their 2019 season, with promising incoming players and a well experienced group of returners to continue the CCU Softball journey.
