Game Recap: Softball |

Cougars Continue Towards RMAC Title

Early on the second day of the RMAC Tournament, the Cougars came out on top against the Regis Rangers in another high-pressure, low-scoring game to advance in the winner's bracket.  The 1-0 victory over the Rangers had the Cougars competing against the #1 seed Colorado Mesa University in the evening.  Christian was defeated 10-0.  Despite the unfortunate loss against the Mavericks, CCU is still in the running towards the championship game.

In the Cougars victory it was a solo run in the bottom of the 3rd inning that won the game.  CCU's center fielder Hanna Farmer made it happen with her incredible base running.  Farmer reached first on a Ranger error.  She then stole second, and stole third.  At this point, there were two outs and the Cougs second baseman Charlotte Romero was at the plate.  Romero hit a line-drive single up the middle that scored Farmer.  CCU led 1-0.

Before Christian put one on the scoreboard, the Rangers had a big opportunity to score in the top of the third.  CCU's ace Kenzie Mattey was on the mound again, and struck out the first batter.  The Cougs had an error which allowed the next batter to reach second.  Then there was a hit by pitch and a single to have the Ranger bases loaded.  But just like she has done so many times this season, Mattey closed the inning, no Rangers scored, with a strikeout and an easy line-out to third baseman Stephanie Day.  Mattey ended the complete game allowing five hits and six strikeouts.

Head coach Shanon Hays commented "Kenzie was fantastic again.  She and Amy worked really well together and we made enough plays to hold Regis off.  I thought leaving all those runners stranded in third was going to come back and bite us, but out pitcher hung in there and threw a clean game.  Besides our one error, we played a good, clean game"

The top three teams Colorado Mesa, Colorado Christian, and Regis University will battle it out tomorrow, Saturday May 5th for the championship title.  CCU will play the Rangers at 11:00 AM to see who competes against the undefeated Mavericks at 1:15 PM.
