The CCU baseball team had their first "home" series of the season as they hosted the Hillcats of Rogers State University at Mountain Lion Park in Colorado Springs, the home of fellow RMAC member UCCS. The Hillcats came into the series with a strong 9-2 record, having defeated some quality opponents, a good measuring stick for the Cougars. Rogers State would take both games before heavy snow rolled into the area, forcing a cancellation of the final game on Saturday.
GAME ONE – Rogers State 15, Colorado Christian 6:
The first game of the day started with near freezing temperatures and building wind. Rogers State took an early lead in the second inning and never looked back, scoring 15 runs on 17 hits, capped by a six run 9th inning. Two ill-timed errors on the part of the Cougars made it so only seven of those 15 runs were earned.
The bulk of the Cougars runs came during a five-run flurry in the bottom of 9th inning. The burst began on the back of Kaleb Sorensen's RBI double, his third hit of the game. Sorenson was one of two Cougars with multiple hits in the first game, along with Matt Kimura's pair from the lead off spot.
GAME TWO – Rogers State 16, Colorado Christian 15:
The second game of the day posted an impressive 31 combined hit and runs between the two teams with only four half innings not producing multiple runs. The Cougars kept it close throughout, always answering the Hillcats offensive onslaught, but never to the point to taking a lead at any point during the day.
Pacing CCU to their highest run total so far this season was senior catcher Joel Manzano who had arguably his best offensive career game as a Cougar. Manzano technically missed recording a cycle since he didn't slap a single, but he may have bested a cycle when he went 4-4 with two doubles, a triple, and a homerun, while also working a walk. Joel also scored five runs and brought in five more, personally accounting for 2/3 of CCU's runs in the game.
WHAT IS NEXT:
The Cougars next "home" series will be played in Denver at Metro State University of Denver due to potential incoming inclement weather. CCU will host the University of Mary Marauders for a doubleheader on March 1, and will take on the Roadrunners on March 3 for a single game.
