Cougars Can't Salvage Sunday Win

CCU baseball completed their two-day double header in Alamosa against the Adams State Grizzlies on Sunday, dropping the first game of the day by a score of 5-8 and the second game by a score of 5-8. The loses puts the Cougars record at 6–15 overall and 1–7 in RMAC play.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

GAME 3 – CCU 5, ASU 8

The opening contest of the day saw the Grizzlies jump out to a commanding 0-6 lead after just two innings, and the Cougars were never able to get closer than three runs down after that. Though playing from behind the entire game, the Cougars managed at least one base runner in every offensive frame of the game except for the top of the 7th inning, but left seven runners on base while also hitting into a pair double plays.

GAME 4 – CCU 5, ASU 8

The final game saw what was likely the best pitching effort from CCU for the whole series when senior Evan Fink took the mound. He struck out four Grizzlies and allowed seven hits, but allowed just one of the five runs against him to be earned. However, three errors in the game, and nine during the series, allowed innings to extend, often resulting in unearned runs. At the end of Saturday, 10 of ASU's 28 runs scored were unearned.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • Connor Marschall had himself a day at the plate going 6-7 (.857) with two runs scored. He has gotten at least one hit in eight of his last nine starts, including a 4-4 performance in game 3 of this series. Marschall has also increased his batting average by over 200 points during that stretch.
  • This is the first time since the 2016 season that CCU has lost their season series against Adams State.
  • The Cougars take on CSU-Pueblo and Colorado Mesa University on the road over the next two weeks, CCU went a combined 1-9 against these two foes last season.

WHAT IS NEXT:

The Cougars will travel to CSU Pueblo for four games against the Thunderwolves March 22, 23, and 24.
